## In short

Kkulkkuine Charcoal Pork Ribs is a pork rib restaurant in Jo-yang-dong, Sokcho, near Cheongcho Lake, across from the district library. The writer ordered three servings of pork belly (180g, ₩16,000) and three servings of house-marinated pork ribs hand-butchered every morning (200g, ₩15,000), grilled over charcoal, plus an extra doenjang jjigae and cold buckwheat noodles. ## Honest review of the side dishes and table setting

*Side dishes*

Once we finished ordering, the owner set out the side dishes right away.

From scallion salad and corn mayo to scallop jeotgal (salted seafood), the spread looked promising for pairing with the meat.

![Lettuce wraps and onion sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-09-ny94z-966.webp)
*Lettuce wraps, onion sauce*

One unusual thing: the scallion salad wasn't seasoned and had bean sprouts mixed in — at Kkulkkuine Charcoal Pork Ribs, you're meant to mix it into the onion sauce yourself.

They also gave us plenty of fresh lettuce and peppers.

Then they brought out the charcoal briquette — since I'm not from the charcoal generation and there aren't many charcoal-grill places left these days, it felt novel and a bit nostalgic. True to a charcoal pork rib specialty restaurant, the distinct smell of the charcoal (different from regular grilling coal) was noticeable right away.

They also served steamed egg, which is never a bad thing to have alongside meat. It was soft and moist, warming up my stomach even before the meat arrived.

A bubbling doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) came as a default side too. Packed with tofu and various vegetables, it had that deep, savory flavor of a traditional stew, like something simmered at home.

## Three servings of pork belly, grilled over charcoal

![Three servings of pork belly on a plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-10-1cg1q-966.webp)
*Three servings of pork belly*

After much deliberation, we ordered three servings of pork belly and three servings of pork ribs.

The pork belly looked high quality just from its color, and at 180g for ₩16,000, the price was reasonable too.

![Pork belly on the raw meat grill plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-11-1mdxf-966.webp)
*Pork belly*

Since the raw meat and the marinated ribs use different grill plates, they brought out the raw meat plate first.

The pork belly was cut to just the right thickness — not too thin, not too thick — and they grilled it well.

*Pork belly*

With the savory aroma of the meat combining with the charcoal smell, I thought to myself that coming to this Jo-yang-dong, Sokcho favorite was a good call.

I'd considered just ordering the pork ribs, but wanted to try the raw meat too — and I would have regretted it if I hadn't.

*Pork belly*

The reason pork belly tastes so good is, of course, the skin part.

The chewy, springy skin harmonizes well with the tender meat and fat.

![Lettuce wrap with pork belly](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-14-1voge-966.webp)
*Lettuce wrap*

This was some of the best pork belly I've had in recent memory.

The chewy texture and savory flavor came through nicely, and it was also great wrapped in lettuce.

![Grilled pork belly with scallion-onion sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-15-m6t0h-966.webp)

![Pork belly and grilled kimchi on the grill plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-16-77db3-966.webp)

The well-grilled pork belly also paired really well with the scallion-onion sauce and the kimchi.

All the side dishes were seasoned just right, so every combination was satisfying.

## House-marinated pork ribs — how to grill them and how they taste

I appreciated that the owner kindly let us know pork ribs take some time to grill, so we should mention it ahead of time.

We swapped out the pork belly plate for a new one to grill the house-marinated pork ribs.

*House-marinated pork ribs*

This is the signature menu item at this Sokcho pork rib favorite — domestic pork ribs marinated in their house-made sauce.

The ribs, marinated in a sauce they simmer themselves, cost ₩15,000 for 200g.

![House-marinated pork ribs of irregular shapes](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-18-1rt9d-966.webp)
*House-marinated pork ribs*

Apparently the owner hand-butchers the ribs every morning.

That's why the shapes of the ribs are all a bit different — but that rustic irregularity actually adds to the distinct atmosphere of this Jo-yang-dong, Sokcho favorite.

*House-marinated pork ribs*

Since the charcoal's heat is concentrated in the center, it's best to grill just two pieces at a time. Since it's marinated, it can burn easily, so flipping it often is key.

The pork ribs were soft and moist with no dryness at all. The marinade wasn't too strong or overly sweet, which I liked.

The tender, well-cooked ribs paired especially well with the scallion garnish. Grilling over charcoal seemed to add a subtle smoky note to the sweet marinade, making the flavor even better.

*Pork ribs*

White rice with pork ribs and grilled kimchi — a combo no Korean would ever dislike.

## Scallop jeotgal, extra doenjang jjigae, and cold buckwheat noodles

Of all the side dishes we had today, the scallop jeotgal (salted seafood) was my favorite by far. It's the ultimate rice thief.

![House-marinated pork ribs eaten with scallop jeotgal](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-21-1wv7k-966.webp)
*House-marinated pork ribs*

It was my first time trying scallop jeotgal, and it was so good I went back for seconds — twice.

It's savory and salty with great umami, and it pairs really well with the pork ribs.

![Doenjang jjigae with tofu and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-22-1sxh1-966.webp)
*Doenjang jjigae*

The default doenjang jjigae that comes with the meal suited my taste so well that I ordered an extra one for ₩2,000.

The warm, savory broth went great with both the pork ribs and rice.

![Cold buckwheat noodles with ice floating in the broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-23-1usud-966.webp)
*Cold buckwheat noodles*

The cold buckwheat noodles came in the refreshing style with bits of ice floating in the broth.

It's ₩5,000, and they also give you vinegar and mustard on the side so you can mix it in to taste.

![Cold noodles paired with marinated ribs](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal/sokcho-cheongchoho-charcoal-pork-ribs-samgyeopsal-24-1n8lg-m-966.webp)

The combination of cold noodles and marinated ribs especially needs no explanation. The cold, tangy broth paired with the sweet ribs and noodles was refreshing and a great way to end the meal.

## Final thoughts

With parking available and a friendly owner, I had a genuinely enjoyable meal at Kkulkkuine Charcoal Pork Ribs, a Jo-yang-dong, Sokcho favorite.

The charcoal-grilling atmosphere and comfortable vibe make it a great Sokcho pork rib restaurant for a family meal or a get-together with friends.

From the savory, juicy pork belly grilled over charcoal to the sweet house-made marinated pork ribs, everything was so good that I want to come back on my next trip to Sokcho.

Between the well-seasoned side dishes, the quality pork belly, and the house-marinated pork ribs, nothing was lacking — so if you're looking for a Jo-yang-dong, Sokcho favorite or a Cheongcho Lake restaurant, Kkulkkuine Charcoal Pork Ribs could be a great choice.
