Choosing a weekend lunch spot is oddly tricky — you want somewhere adults and kids can both enjoy, but that doesn't feel like too skimpy a meal. My recent visit to Yongsan Donkatsu Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang, Yongsan branch, a pork cutlet restaurant in Yongsan, Seoul, was exactly the kind of place that fits the bill. It's not just a plate of cutlet on its own — you get cold soba, rice, soup and bread alongside it, and there are separate bar seats that are comfortable if you're eating solo.

Yongsan Donkatsu Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang, Yongsan branch splits its seating into a long row of window-side single bar seats and regular tables on the other side. That window bar was the first thing I noticed walking in.

Eating alone can feel a bit awkward when you end up hogging a four-top table, but here there are several dedicated single seats, which makes it pretty comfortable if you're looking for a solo lunch spot in Yongsan. The other side is mostly regular tables.

There's something reassuring about seeing this soup arrive first when you've come for a classic pork cutlet.

If I had to pick just one to order again, it would be the spicy pork cutlet at Yongsan Donkatsu Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang, Yongsan branch. Based on the name alone you'd expect it to hit spicy right away, but to me the sweetness came through first.

Then as you keep eating, the heat gradually builds.

You could see the cross-section of the cutlet clearly, with the red sauce coating the breading generously all over.

It's the type where the sweetness lulls you in and then suddenly you think, 'Wait, this is actually getting spicy now.' The heat doesn't make a loud entrance at the start.

So rather than powering through this dish alone, alternating bites with the cold soba that comes with it worked really well. I still find myself thinking about that sweet-and-spicy sauce — between the two menus, the spicy pork cutlet is the one that's stuck with me most.

The classic gyeongyangsik pork cutlet was a more comfortably approachable choice.

It's the familiar gyeongyangsik style, with plenty of sauce ladled over the top of the cutlet.

Since the overall flavor direction leans sweet, if spicy food isn't your thing or you're choosing a cutlet to share with kids, I'd personally lean toward the classic pork cutlet first.

And one thing that's quietly fun about this restaurant's set is that it doesn't end with just the cutlet.

I spread strawberry jam on the bread that came with it, and I really loved that combination. The cutlet is already sweet, and finishing with a sweet piece of bread felt like a little stress relief. It really brought out the fun of a full gyeongyangsik spread.

## Order the spicy cutlet with cold soba on the side

The cold soba in the set wasn't just an afterthought either.

It came in a large bowl on its own, topped with dried seaweed flakes, scallions, what looked like grated radish, and citrus slices.

Especially with the spicy pork cutlet, alternating — a bite of cutlet, then a turn with the cold soba — made the combination much more comfortable to eat.

Take a bite of soba whenever the sweet-and-spicy sauce keeps building, then go back to the cutlet. That was the eating order I landed on as my favorite while working through both dishes. So if you're curious about the spicy pork cutlet, I'd say it works better as part of the cold soba set rather than eaten on its own.

## Is the Onjeong set worth it for a full one-plate meal?

Yongsan Donkatsu Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang, Yongsan branch worked well for a good-value solo lunch or a family weekend meal for reasons beyond just the cutlet price. You get cold soba and cutlet together, soup, rice and bread all in one spread, plus unlimited rice and side dish refills — clear reasons to choose it if a full lunch spread matters to you.

If you're on your own, the window bar seats are a comfortable spot to eat; for a family, I'd suggest the sweet classic pork cutlet, and if you're craving something spicier, my personal favorite combo of the spicy cutlet with cold soba. Especially with the spicy cutlet, alternating with cold soba partway through rather than riding on that initial sweetness the whole way suited my taste best.

If you like a lunch set with several things to eat together rather than just a single plate of cutlet, this is a place worth putting on your list in Yongsan.
