## In short

Masamgyetang Bangbaeng Sageori Branch is a Korean chicken restaurant near Bangbaeng Sageori in Gangnam, Seoul. I had the ₩18,000 yam samgyetang, and found its freshly grated yam broth rich, the chicken tender, and the glutinous-rice porridge filling.

Thinking about the samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) I missed on boknal (the traditional hottest days of summer), I visited Masamgyetang Bangbaeng Sageori Branch (마삼계탕 뱅뱅사거리점). It was a memorable meal for its rich broth blended with fresh yam, tender chicken, and generous glutinous-rice porridge.

## Where is it, and is parking available?

The restaurant is on the first floor at 19 Dogok-ro 3-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, near Bangbaeng Sageori in Gangnam. With 1 hour 30 minutes of free parking available, I thought it would be convenient to visit by car.

At the time of my visit, the posted weekday hours were 11 AM to 9 PM, with last orders at 8:30 PM. On Sundays, it was open from 11 AM to 8 PM, with last orders at 7:30 PM, and it was regularly closed every Saturday. Group dining, takeout, and reservations were available, and corkage was available for a fee.

## What is the seating like for an office lunch or group meal?

The interior was generally clean and spacious. There were plenty of different tables, including two- and four-person tables, making it comfortable to dine without feeling cramped. Being near Bangbaeng Sageori, it also seemed like a good place for nearby office workers to stop by for a weekday lunch.

Aprons for dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) and instant coffee mix were also available.

## How much are the samgyetang and lunch dishes?

The menu was concise and focused on chicken dishes. I tend to prefer restaurants that focus on one ingredient or type of dish, so I liked the selection. The menu and prices at the time of my visit were as follows.

- Yam samgyetang ₩18,000
- Half yam samgyetang ₩11,000 — available only until 3 PM
- Samgyetang chicken porridge ₩12,000
- Steamed rice ₩1,000
- Dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken), three servings ₩42,000
- Extra rice cakes and glass noodles ₩2,000
- Boneless fried chicken ₩17,000
- Stir-fried chicken gizzards ₩16,000
- Fried ginseng ₩11,000

There were also dishes to have with drinks, so it seemed suitable for a simple drink after work. I was curious about the chicken too, but I had come after a health checkup that day, so I did not have it. At the time of my visit, there was also an event offering chocolate for writing a Naver receipt review.

## How did the yam samgyetang broth and chicken taste?

The side dishes were napa cabbage kimchi, pickled radish, pickled chili peppers, seasoned garlic, and cabbage pickles. They went well with samgyetang, and pepper was also available at the table.

I ordered the ₩18,000 yam samgyetang. It arrived with the milky broth still bubbling, topped with a little chive and pine nut.

The broth, blended with freshly grated yam, was thick and substantial. One spoonful had a rich, deep flavor, but it was not overly intense for me, so it was easy to eat.

The chicken breast was tender rather than tough or dry. It paired well with the rich broth.

The chicken leg was plump, and the meat came off the bone easily. It was convenient to eat because the meat separated from the bone even as I lifted it with chopsticks.

## Is one bowl filling, and can you get more side dishes?

There was a generous amount of glutinous-rice porridge inside the chicken. I lightly dipped the chicken in salt for a mild taste, then spooned it up with the porridge and topped it with kimchi or pickled chili peppers. The side dishes rounded out what could otherwise feel lightly seasoned.

I could get more side dishes from the self-service station. The pickled chili peppers and pickled radish were not too salty for me and went well with the samgyetang, so I went back for more. I thought the hair ties provided for meals were thoughtful, and the owner was kind as well.

I enjoyed the tender chicken and rich broth to the last bite and finished the bowl. With the glutinous-rice porridge included, it made for a filling meal in one bowl.
