## In short

Kosi Isu Branch is a Japanese restaurant near Isu Station in Dongjak, Seoul, serving handmade udon and tonkatsu. I ordered the mixed tonkatsu, ebi tempura udon, and Pepsi Zero Cola, and loved the crisp cutlet, springy noodles, and deep bonito broth despite the wait. Kosi Isu Branch made for a satisfying, seriously filling meal.

Tonkatsu and udon—aren't they soul foods you never get tired of and need to periodically replenish? It is surprisingly hard to find a place with truly solid basics, but this time I found one that hit my taste right on the mark...!! If you are on a date around Sadang or Isu, or looking for a good restaurant, I highly recommend Kosi Isu Branch. It exceeded my expectations and I left so satisfied..!!

## Kosi Isu Branch exterior and the wait

As soon as I arrived, the clean, neat wood-toned exterior caught my eye—simple and without any unnecessary fuss.

There was a large illustrated menu board by the entrance, so I loved being able to choose ahead of time before going in. Can you see how packed the waiting list at the entrance was? Just what you would expect from a genuinely popular Isu Station spot. Thankfully, there were chairs right outside the restaurant, so I could wait comfortably without my legs aching. A wait is a must, but it makes the anticipation shoot straight up too!

## Wood-toned dining room and high chairs

When it was finally my turn to go in, the restaurant was already so full there were no empty seats.... The warm wood-toned interior, from the ceiling to the tables, felt incredibly cozy and relaxing. The tables were spacious, and the wall side had cushy sofa seats, perfect for a nice, intimate meal with your companion. They had also thoughtfully provided wooden high chairs in one corner. Families and parents dining with children should be able to eat completely at ease. Such a thoughtful space that works for solo diners, couples on dates, and family meals alike!

## Handmade udon and my order

A sign in Chinese characters declaring “handmade noodles” stood proudly by the entrance! From that moment, my good-restaurant radar started going beep beep. An udon restaurant that makes its own noodles—how could it possibly not be delicious?

Once seated and looking through the menu, I seriously deliberated for ages. Everything looked so good ㅠㅠ In the end, I wanted crispy tonkatsu (Japanese breaded pork cutlet) but absolutely could not give up chewy udon either, so I ordered a proper spread. I got the mixed tonkatsu and ebi tempura udon (udon with shrimp tempura), plus a Pepsi Zero Cola.

## Mixed tonkatsu and bouncy udon noodles

The first main dish to arrive was the gorgeous-looking mixed tonkatsu. Tender filet? A chewy loin? Or rich cheese? For an indecisive person like me who always agonizes in front of the menu, this generous dish is like light and salt. If you visit Kosi Isu Branch, whatever else you do, you really must try the udon. One bite instantly explains why they confidently display that “handmade noodles” title at the entrance. The udon noodles are seriously insane. They are on an entirely different level from the ready-made supermarket udon that snaps apart. Their chew and bounce, almost as if they dance in your mouth, are totally alive.

The moment you bite into the tonkatsu, you hear that bright crunch! The coating is not overly thick but beautifully crisp, while the meat inside is full of juices, so there is zero dryness. This is the textbook definition of crisp outside, tender inside! ㅠㅠ First, dip it lightly in salt to bring out the meat's natural flavor. Then dip it generously in the house tonkatsu sauce and add a little wasabi—the richness disappears, and suddenly you can eat it forever. The crunchy cabbage salad on the side had a refreshing dressing too, making it a perfect match for the tonkatsu.

The udon broth was no joke either. It was not overly salty, yet its deep, rich katsuobushi (dried bonito) flavor warmed me right through. And what more can I say about that big shrimp tempura, slightly softened after soaking up the hot broth... Take a big bite and the plump shrimp inside its thin coating pops! It was so nutty and delicious. Being able to enjoy handmade tonkatsu and handmade udon of this quality near Isu Station made for such a happy, filling meal... haha
