## In short

Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is a buckwheat noodle restaurant near Yangjae Citizens' Forest Station in Seocho, Seoul. Its new buckwheat clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) costs 13,000 won per person with a two-serving minimum, the king mandu (dumplings with neungi mushroom or meat) is 8,000 won, and shelling the pile of clams took over 10 minutes, while three spoons of dadaegi (spicy seasoning paste) left the broth clean rather than hot. Two people sharing two servings of noodles and one order of mandu at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo still had food left over.

A buckwheat restaurant opened near Yangjae Citizens' Forest Station! Last time I had the perilla oil makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles), so today I came back for the true buckwheat classic — the new buckwheat clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodles). Looks like a winter-ready, clam-bomb kalguksu!! Here's my review of a very filling meal at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo in Yangjae :))

## Where is Seonbawi Memil Jangteo, and is there parking?

Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is a buckwheat restaurant on Gangnam-daero 18-gil near Yangjae Citizens' Forest Station. It's open daily from 9am to 9pm, with 4 free parking spots in front of the store.

There's room for about 4 cars in front, and it's a bit tight, so check nearby public parking lots too if you're driving! We just walked over since it's right next to our house.

## Inside Seonbawi Memil Jangteo: the 2nd-floor group room

Given the type of menu, the main customers at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Citizens' Forest branch were neighborhood elders haha — but of course there were also plenty of young customers like us. I have a feeling once the weather gets colder, the place will fill right up with clam kalguksu devotees. The restaurant has two floors, and the 2nd floor is a huge space that can fit up to 50 people at once, so it'd also make a great spot for group gatherings haha.

![Watery-style kimchi served alongside the kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-09-1y2ee-900.webp)

This is the kimchi that comes with the buckwheat clam kalguksu. It's more of a mul-kimchi (watery kimchi)-style, lightly seasoned kimchi, so it paired well with the king mandu too.

![A small dish of optional dadaegi chili paste](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-10-gl2zu-900.webp)

Dadaegi (spicy chili paste condiment) is optional! We tried it plain first, then added the dadaegi — the spicy broth was even better.

## Buckwheat clam kalguksu: a mountain of clams to shell

The buckwheat clam kalguksu arrived. They said the clams would be piled like a mountain and wow, it really was a mountain haha. The portion was massive, and shelling them all took quite a while.

![Buckwheat clam kalguksu piled high with clams](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-11-18bib-900.webp)

4 pieces of king mandu! Two filled with neungi mushroom (pine mushroom) and two filled with meat — nice to be able to try both kinds at once.

The king mandu were a bit smaller than my fist, but really plump.

So, about 10 minutes of shelling clams ahead of us. You can eat as you go, but we wanted to just dig in comfortably, so we shelled them all upfront — and there were still plenty of clams hiding at the bottom of the broth, so we ended up shelling clams for over 10 minutes lol.

A huge pile of clam shells — truly a clam mountain. It looked like there weren't that many at first, but more kept turning up between the buckwheat noodles and hiding at the bottom lol.

I gathered them in the middle for a photo — there were still hidden ones, but even so, that's really a lot of clams lol.

## Neungi mushroom king mandu vs. meat king mandu

The king mandu wrapper also contains buckwheat, so it's a bit darker in color!! Packed full of good-for-you buckwheat!!

At first I thought they were all meat mandu, and while eating I kept thinking, what's this smell? This isn't meat mandu — what is it? Then I checked the menu again and realized they had neungi mushrooms in them haha. No wonder every table of elders had king mandu on it.

## 100% buckwheat noodles in dried pollack broth

With this many clams in it, can you sense the ocean scent from the broth in the photo? The broth is seriously milky white.

Can you see the flecks of buckwheat dotted through the noodles? These are made with 100% pure buckwheat, and apparently the restaurant makes every noodle in-house!! Maybe that's why the noodle thickness varied so much too, which made it even more fun to eat.

![Close-up of the milky broth and pure buckwheat noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-18-1ufv0-900.webp)

There were big chunks of hwangtae (dried pollack) in there too, which made the broth taste so refreshing.

## How many spoons of dadaegi should you add?

For round two, we added dadaegi. Scooping in 3 to 4 heaping spoons was just right. Even piled in generously, it wasn't as spicy as it looked, so it paired well with the refreshing broth even in large amounts.

![Kalguksu right before adding dadaegi](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-20-6kd88-900.webp)

Ta-da ❤️

This is the broth color after three spoons. It's not spicy at all, so if you like spicy food, add even more!! Go for it!!

![Lifting up a serving of buckwheat noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-23-g4yhf-900.webp)

## Two servings for two: how filling is it?

The portions were bigger than expected, so with two servings of buckwheat clam kalguksu plus one order of mandu for two people, we were seriously stuffed and ended up leaving some noodles behind :( After demolishing that clam bomb, leaving behind delicious buckwheat noodles was such a shame...

![Buckwheat tea served at the end of the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu/yangjae-memil-bajirak-kalguksu-new-menu-24-560qe-900.webp)

Finish it off with buckwheat tea and you can fill your whole meal, start to finish, with buckwheat haha. It's on a totally different level from the tea bag buckwheat tea you steep at home, so even if you're full, you have to have the buckwheat tea!! Alright, another good meal down — review over :))
