## In short

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is a white-charcoal grilled pork bone restaurant one minute's walk from Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, and on weekday lunchtimes it serves a lunch special of ppyeo gamjatang (pork bone and potato stew), ppyeogogi guksu (bone meat noodle soup) and ppyeogogi gukbap (bone meat rice soup). Two friends arrived at noon on a weekday, shared the ppyeo gamjatang and then fried rice in the leftover broth, which tasted mild rather than fiery with a faint smoky char. Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is worth recommending as a lunch for office workers around Euljiro, Myeongdong and Jongno.

On a weekday lunch, I went with a friend to Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui for their ppyeo gamjatang (pork bone and potato stew) — here's how it went!

Figuring out what to eat for lunch these days is honestly its own kind of stress. When you want something hearty and a bit special instead of the usual options near the office, my friend happened to feel the same way and suggested we make a little lunch expedition to Euljiro.

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui had been on my radar for a while from social media and blogs, so we decided on it right away.

It's famous as a dinner spot for company dinners, so I was a little worried there wouldn't be much for weekday lunch — but it turns out they run a lunch special with ppyeogogi guksu (bone meat noodle soup), ppyeogogi gukbap (bone meat rice soup), and ppyeo gamjatang. That made it easy to drop by without much pressure.

## Where is Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, and how long is the weekday lunch wait?

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is almost exactly a one-minute walk from Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station, so there's no chance of getting lost. We arrived around noon on a weekday, and the place was already fairly full of office workers thanks to the lunch rush.

The wait wasn't as long as it would be at dinner, but if you want to eat at a relaxed pace, I'd still recommend booking ahead through Naver Reservation or Catch Table. We went without a reservation and luckily only waited about 10 minutes before being seated.

## Inside the restaurant: why white charcoal matters

The moment we walked in, the smell of charcoal smoke was striking. As the name suggests, Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui only uses baektan (white charcoal), considered the top grade of charcoal. When I asked a staff member, they explained that baektan can burn as hot as 1,300 degrees Celsius and produces far less smoke and odor than regular charcoal, which brings out the meat's natural flavor.

The interior mixes Euljiro's signature retro vibe with modern touches, which made it a fun spot for photos with my friend. Glancing around, most other tables were digging into the restaurant's signature dinner item, the baektan grilled bones — the garlic and charcoal aroma drifting through the hall alone was enough to make my mouth water.

## Menu and prices: what comes with the lunch special?

Opening the menu, the dinner lineup centers on grilled bones (small ₩39,000, medium ₩47,000, large ₩55,000), alongside grilled cuttlefish, fried cuttlefish, potato pancake, and ppyeo gamjatang hot pot. For lunch, a lighter selection is offered as a special: ppyeogogi guksu, ppyeogogi gukbap, and ppyeo gamjatang.

There's also a corkage service (₩20,000 per bottle) for wine or whiskey lovers, handy to know if you're coming for dinner with friends. Since it was a weekday lunch, we went with the low-pressure choice: ppyeo gamjatang.

The side dishes were simple — pickled peppers and onions, aged kimchi, and crisp, well-ripened kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) — nothing excessive, just what was needed. The water came straight from sealed bottles, which felt nicely hygienic.

## How did the ppyeo gamjatang taste?

And finally, the ppyeo gamjatang arrived! The stone pot was packed with hefty pork bones, ugeoji (dried napa cabbage leaves), and potatoes — my friend and I both gasped when we saw it. The broth had a deep, dark color that made it obvious it had been simmered with real care.

One spoonful in, it was milder than I'd worried it might be — a rich bone broth flavor with just a gentle kick of spice layered on top. Even my friend, who's not great with spicy food, could eat it comfortably, while the deep savory flavor still came through clearly.

Because the broth is made from bones grilled over baektan, there was a faint smoky char woven through it that set it apart from other gamjatang places I've tried.

The meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone with just a light touch of the chopsticks. The coarsely chopped garlic seasoning had soaked all the way through, leaving it clean with no gamey smell at all.

The potatoes had soaked up so much broth they were fluffy yet moist — I could have happily eaten a few more just on their own. The ugeoji was well-boiled and tender rather than tough, and paired with the broth it kept pulling my spoon back in.

My friend, who doesn't usually go for gamjatang, said the broth here was mild rather than harsh and full of deep flavor, so she kept reaching for more.

## Frying rice in the leftover broth: enough for two?

The portion was generous enough for two to share and still leave broth behind — enough that we fried up rice in the leftover soup afterward.

![The nearly-finished stone pot of ppyeo gamjatang](https://img.superchart.com/images/euljiro-lunch-special-bone-stew/euljiro-lunch-special-bone-stew-11-q87tv-966.webp)

By the time we'd chatted our way through most of the stone pot, we ordered an extra bowl of rice and mixed it into fried rice right there. Eating rice fried in the leftover broth genuinely felt like cheating, it was that good. The staff carefully fried it so it wouldn't stick to the pot, a thoughtful touch that bumped up our satisfaction even more.

Since it was a weekday lunch, tables turned over quickly, so we didn't have to wait long and could chat comfortably while eating. The staff were friendly too, answering our questions about the menu and spice levels in detail. Apparently the private rooms and group seating make it popular for company dinners at night, but even a simple bowl of gamjatang at weekday lunch was enough to feel the real value of Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui.

## What time should you arrive to avoid the lunch queue?

After eating our fill, including the rice, it was nearly 1pm. As we headed out for coffee, we noticed a small crowd already gathering to wait outside — a good reminder that we'd timed it well by going a bit early. It seems like going a little before noon, or after 1pm when things calm down, is the better bet for avoiding a wait.

For anyone working around Euljiro, Myeongdong, or Jongno, I'd strongly recommend this as a quick lunchtime trip. It worked well for a cozy catch-up with a friend, but it would also suit a casual lunch outing with coworkers.

The price is easy on the wallet, but the quality of the baektan-simmered broth is anything but light — anyone tired of the usual lunch rotation will especially appreciate it. Next time, I definitely want to come back for dinner and properly try the signature grilled bones and grilled cuttlefish.
