I really don't know why I lose all motivation to cook on Friday evenings haha. This time too, my mom and I were going back and forth on what to eat for dinner and ended up deciding to eat out! Then I suddenly remembered Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch, a place I'd visited with my parents before. I had good memories of it, and my mom loves tonkatsu too, so we went back after a while. This time we thought about what to order but ended up going with the usual menu.

Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch felt personally nostalgic since I'd been here with my parents before. Walking in again, the subtly appealing retro vibe caught my eye. There's cozy sofa seating as well as regular tables, so it looked comfortable for a family meal.

This place isn't just a small restaurant with a few tables — it actually uses up to the 3rd floor.

There's a separate waiting zone on the 3rd floor with a waiting area, and they even had drinks ready for people waiting, which felt like a thoughtful touch. I guess this is the kind of small detail that sets apart the truly popular restaurants in Gwangju.

What we ordered that day was ssam donkatsu! Tonkatsu is usually something you dip in sauce, but 'ssam donkatsu' (wrap-style pork cutlet) already sounds different from the name alone.

## Ordering ssam donkatsu and waiting for it

After ordering ssam donkatsu at Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch and waiting a bit, salad, pickles, and a warm soup came out first. Having a spoonful of soup before the tonkatsu arrived felt comforting, and eating it alongside the salad naturally got my appetite going. ## The ssam donkatsu arrives: what comes on the tray

After a short wait, the ssam donkatsu finally arrived. The plate was piled high with tonkatsu, surrounded by cabbage, cucumber, carrots, and various other vegetables, so the visual alone was clearly different from a regular tonkatsu.

And you can also refill the rice paper and vegetables! Mom and I said, refills, let's go~~

First, I tried the tonkatsu just as it was

and then dipped it in sauce — and yep, the classic combo never fails. Crispy breading with tonkatsu sauce was familiar yet delicious. But the real fun of this dish was in something else.

## Wrapped in rice paper and vegetables, a completely different bite

Since it's called ssam donkatsu, we had to try wrapping it properly, right? Haha

Placing vegetables on the rice paper, then the crispy-fried tonkatsu, then adding sauce and eating it in one bite — it felt totally different from just dipping it in sauce.

The crunch of the vegetables against the crispiness of the tonkatsu made the texture fun, and the chewy rice paper wrapping it all together made it feel like a genuinely healthy bite. My mom and I kept saying this way of eating it was better, adding more vegetables and wrapping bite after bite haha. If you usually like tonkatsu but want to try eating it a bit differently, this style might be fun for you too.
