As the weather's gotten a bit cooler lately, I started craving something restorative. So this time I went for grilled eel at Yuil Jangeo (유일장어) in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju ☺️

## Parking and first impressions at Yuil Jangeo

Yuil Jangeo has its own dedicated parking lot. It's spacious, so I didn't have to worry about parking at all, which was great haha

The inside is quite spacious too. The tables have plenty of room, and there's a separate room in the back you can use if you book ahead.

Overall the space felt roomy and comfortable — good for family meals, and it also seemed like a solid spot for group gatherings or company dinners. I especially liked that there's a private room, which would be great for that kind of get-together haha!

## Picking a two-person eel pack for around ₩40,000 from the showcase

At Yuil Jangeo, once you walk in, you pick your eel directly from a showcase and prepay. I liked being able to compare quantity and price myself. Since the price was so reasonable, I didn't expect much in terms of size, but up close the eels were surprisingly thick and hearty!

Yuil Jangeo is run directly by its own eel farm, cutting out the middlemen — which is how they keep prices reasonable, apparently. Any worry I had that the eel might be flimsy vanished the moment I saw it in person. Our two-person pack came to just over ₩40,000 — incredible value for two people 😇💗

After you pay for the eel you picked from the showcase, staff give it a first pre-grill before bringing it to your table.

### How much is the table charge at Yuil Jangeo?

Since it's a self-grill restaurant, there's a separate table charge that covers the charcoal and side dishes — ₩4,000 for adults, ₩2,000 for elementary schoolers, so it didn't feel like a big add-on.

It's technically self-grill, but there's a sign saying to call staff over if grilling gets tricky, so even beginners should feel comfortable 😊

## Grilling pre-cooked eel over charcoal yourself

After a short wait, staff brought out the eel, already given its first grill! Once it's laid out beautifully on the charcoal like this, you just finish grilling it golden-brown to your liking. Watching it pick up that charcoal aroma as it cooked, I was glad I came..🔥

Flipping it back and forth until golden, the charcoal aroma really set in and the fat rose up rich and moist. It smelled amazing enough on its own..🤤 What I especially liked was how thick and hearty it stayed even after grilling — the flesh was so plump it looked incredibly appetizing.

One bite and the outside was crisp while the inside was soft and moist, filling my whole mouth..💗

### The best combination: eel in a perilla leaf with ginger

The eel's natural richness is delicious on its own, but wrapping a piece in perilla leaf with ginger was hands-down the best way to eat it! Charcoal-grilled eel really is the way to go..🔥

## Self-serve vegetable bar and after-meal dishes

There's also a self-serve bar. If you run low on side dishes or vegetables while eating, you can just grab more yourself. Lettuce, garlic, chili, onion, kimchi, ginger — all the good pairings for eel were there, and you take as much as you need. We went back a few times for extras while eating.

There was a decent variety of dessert options for after the eel too — eel soup, nurungji (scorched rice), plain naengmyeon (cold noodles), bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles), so you can just pick whatever you're in the mood for. If you want to finish cleanly after eel, naengmyeon or bibim naengmyeon seems like the popular pick, and if you're craving something warm, eel soup or nurungji looked good too.

We only had the two-person eel portion, but since the pieces were so big and thick, we ended up pretty full anyway. We meant to try dessert too but sadly had to pass this time ~~🤣

There are also self-serve coffee machines to use after your meal. Nice touch that there were two different kinds, so you could pick to your taste. A cup of coffee to cleanse the palate after a filling eel meal..☕️

## Who should eat at Yuil Jangeo?

If you're looking for a grilled eel spot that nails both value and quality, I'd strongly recommend Yuil Jangeo. Being run directly by their own eel farm means you can enjoy thick, fresh domestic freshwater eel at a reasonable price — I left very satisfied. It's a great place to take your parents, or to go when the weather turns chilly and you need a boost of energy 💗🪽 I was so happy with it that I plan to come back multiple times 😊!
