## In short

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is a galbi hot pot and yukjeon (pan-fried beef pancake) restaurant on Dongmun-gil in Jeonju Hanok Village. Two friends ordered the galbi hot pot set (22,000 won) for lunch and shared pre-seasoned yukjeon plus a hot pot loaded with soybean sprouts and glass noodles, with the owner stopping by to check when it was cooked through. The spice was mild enough for a spice-shy eater, and it was a filling meal that cleared a whole bowl of rice.

I went on a little outing to Jeonju Hanok Village with a close friend after a long while. It had been ages since we walked around leisurely together without the kids, and it felt great haha.

We were sightseeing around the hanok village when lunchtime hit, and since we both wanted Korean food, we picked Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, which is also close to the public parking lot.

## Where is Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, and where do you park?

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is at 28 Dongmun-gil, 1st floor, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk. You can walk there from Hanok Village Public Parking Lot No. 1, and there's also a separate space in front of the restaurant that fits about 5 to 6 cars.

We had parked at Hanok Village Public Parking Lot No. 1 and gone to look around the village first, and since the restaurant is close to that lot, it was easy to head straight back to the car after eating.

> There's also a separate space in front of the restaurant that fits about 5 cars.

If you're coming just to eat without sightseeing the hanok village, parking right in front of the restaurant seemed fine too.

## Inside Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi: nothing like the exterior

From outside, Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi looks like an old-fashioned building, but inside it's modern and clean. There's a small pond and fountain in front of the restaurant too.

![Small pond and fountain in front of the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-04-2tbni-675.webp)

With the small pond and fountain out front, the building had such an old-fashioned feel that I assumed the inside would match,

![Entrance of Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-05-1wq9f-675.webp)

but stepping inside, it was way more modern and clean than I expected.

![Modern, clean interior of the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-06-1jnkr-675.webp)

The outside and inside felt so different that we both said it was a total plot twist and walked in happily haha.

![Window seat with a full glass wall](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-07-1qwef-675.webp)

We sat by the window, where a full glass wall let us see straight outside. The weather was clear so even the sky looked pretty — I liked the seat right away. :)

## What comes in the 22,000 won galbi hot pot set?

The menu at Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi has galbi hot pot for ₩17,000, the galbi hot pot set for ₩22,000, and a plate of yukjeon (beef pancake) for ₩25,000. We ordered the galbi hot pot set, which comes with yukjeon.

![Menu board listing galbi hot pot and the set](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-08-11bj3-699.webp)

Looking at the menu board, there were two options — the galbi hot pot alone and the set — but since we'd heard you absolutely have to try the yukjeon here, we ordered the set without hesitation.

- Galbi hot pot: ₩17,000
- Galbi hot pot set: ₩22,000
- Yukjeon, one plate: ₩25,000

![Table set with basic side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-09-1rb5k-675.webp)

![Disposable apron and basic table setting](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-10-1oi1w-640.webp)

After ordering, the basic side dishes were set out right away. There were also disposable aprons, so we could put them on before eating. If you're worried about splashes on your clothes, definitely wear the disposable apron. ^^

![Restaurant interior with instructions on how to eat](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-11-mt76m-m-625.webp)

While waiting, we looked around the interior and read the instructions on how to eat it best. You could really feel that the owner and staff were paying attention to every table.

## Yukjeon seasoned enough to eat without dipping sauce

The yukjeon at Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is already seasoned into the meat, so you're meant to eat it plain without dipping sauce. Even with a group of guests in the restaurant, the galbi hot pot didn't take long to arrive.

![Galbi hot pot on the burner](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-12-tqf9s-641.webp)

There was a group of guests too, but the galbi hot pot still came out without a long wait. They set the hot pot on the burner and then brought the yukjeon right after.

![Plate of seasoned yukjeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-13-zu5j9-840.webp)

As they set down the yukjeon, they explained that the meat is already seasoned, so you can eat it as is without any dipping sauce.

> Taking a bite right away, it was on the thicker side but still super tender, and the seasoning was just right — not salty at all whether eaten plain or with rice!!

![A thick piece of pan-fried yukjeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-14-1084q-675.webp)

The yukjeon was good enough that you'd believe this was a beef-pancake specialty spot rather than a mulgalbi restaurant haha. Whenever we eat out with kids, mulgalbi places have been hard to manage because of their picky tastes, but here the yukjeon is this soft and there's steamed egg on the menu too, so it seemed like a place we could bring the kids.

![Soybean sprout side dish served as a basic side](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-15-11ba0-595.webp)

Even the soybean sprouts served as a basic side dish tasted like something kids would eat with rice, and with baby chairs available, it seemed fine for families too!

## The owner checks the galbi hot pot until it is ready

At Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, the owner comes by periodically to personally check how well the galbi hot pot has cooked. If the meat doesn't cut easily, it's not the scissors' fault — it's just not done yet, they explain.

![Galbi hot pot bubbling on the burner](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-16-1ouuh-675.webp)

While we were eating the yukjeon, the galbi hot pot started bubbling away, and the owner came by several times to check on it personally. I usually have a hard time telling when hot pots or seasoned meats like this are cooked enough to eat, so it was nice to be able to eat comfortably with them checking repeatedly until it was done!

![Dining hall with lunchtime guests](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-17-s3ofp-820.webp)

Since it was lunchtime, there were quite a few other tables, and most of the guests were older folks.

> Seeing groups of older neighborhood folks eating together and having little gatherings, I thought — this must really be a local favorite. :)

Once the galbi hot pot had simmered enough, the owner came over and told us it was almost fully cooked and we could cut and eat the meat. They also kindly explained that if the meat doesn't cut easily, it's not the scissors' fault — it just needs a bit more cooking before cutting.

Ours was cooked well and cut through nice and smoothly haha.

## How spicy is the galbi hot pot for a spice-shy eater?

The broth of the galbi hot pot at Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi looks reddish, but it's less spicy than you'd expect. It's loaded with soybean sprouts and glass noodles, and if you want it spicier, you can add chopped cheongyang chili.

![Soybean sprouts and glass noodles scooped from the galbi hot pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-18-m6gek-675.webp)

Following the eating instructions posted in the restaurant, we scooped out the soybean sprouts and glass noodles first — and they were really generous! The glass noodles were well seasoned, and the sprouts were crisp, making you want another bite right away.

![Seasoned glass noodles and red hot pot broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-19-51my6-610.webp)

I'm not great with spicy food, and since the broth looked pretty red, I was a little worried it'd be too hot — but it turned out to be way less spicy than expected?!?! Even as a spice-shy eater, it was just right for me! If you want it spicier, they say you can add a bit of chopped cheongyang chili, so spice lovers, keep that in mind. ^^

![Galbi meat cut into easy-to-eat pieces](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-20-1wo1r-675.webp)

![Lettuce wrap with meat and soybean sprouts](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-21-1ij80-675.webp)

We also tried the galbi, cut into easy-to-eat pieces, together with the soybean sprouts — not a single tough bite, all tender!! Wrapping meat, sprouts, and chives together in lettuce made for a really filling meal. ^^ It wasn't too spicy and had a bit of sweetness too, so I think even kids who can handle a little spice could eat this together.

## A full bowl of rice finished, fried rice saved for next time

Once you finish the galbi hot pot, you can also get fried rice made with the leftover sauce. We were too full to have the fried rice.

![Full table spread with rice and galbi hot pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-22-tryw6-774.webp)

My friend said the side dishes, yukjeon, and galbi were all so good that she wants to come back with the kids next time haha. Normally neither of us can finish a full bowl of rice, but that day, chatting about how good everything was, we somehow each cleared our whole bowl.

![Galbi hot pot midway through the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set/jeonju-hanok-village-mulgalbi-galbi-jeongol-set-23-4ip9e-893.webp)
*Not finished yet — this was taken partway through eating haha*

Even full, my friend kept picking at the meat on the bones, and I scraped up the last of the sprouts — the seasoning wasn't salty at all, so my chopsticks kept reaching for more even without rice. Apparently once you finish, you can get fried rice made with the leftover galbi hot pot sauce. We were both too full to try the fried rice, and it was such a shame..ㅠ haha. Next time I'll come with the family and make sure to try the fried rice too..ㅎ

## Is Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi worth a Jeonju lunch?

If you want a filling meal during your Jeonju Hanok Village trip, Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi seems like a great choice.

We walked out feeling like we'd just had a hearty home-cooked meal, the kind mom used to make, after a long time. ^^

> If you come to Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi, make sure to try the yukjeon~~ !! ^^
