## In short

Boriook Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Yeongtong, Suwon, where a self-serve bar gives you unlimited barley rice, namul (seasoned vegetables), fritters and gungjung tteokbokki (mild royal-style rice cakes). We ordered the barley rice set and the grilled soy-sauce pork set and ate them with cheonggukjang (rich fermented soybean stew), and the sesame oil on every table was deep and clean-tasting with no stale note. Boriook Main Branch suits any day you want a generous, homestyle Korean meal.

Lately whenever I crave Korean food, I somehow end up thinking about barley rice or a table full of namul (seasoned vegetable side dishes). Places that specialize in just barley rice are rare unless you're going hiking, and even then you only get a small handful of namul, which is never enough ㅜ So after a ton of searching, I ended up at Boriook Main Branch (보리옥 본점) in Suwon.

## Inside Boriook Main Branch and its outdoor terrace

The inside of Boriook Main Branch is clean and spacious, looking great for groups!

Outside there's also a café terrace, so it looked like a nice spot to sit with coffee and chat after the meal to help digest. Perfect for weather like this haha

## How does the self-serve bar at Boriook work?

Boriook is a place centered around barley rice, where you can also enjoy various namul and side dishes together. What I especially liked was that you can use the self-serve bar freely!

![Namul self-serve bar corner at Boriook Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-06-raz6o-900.webp)

I'll write more about it below, but there was rice and various namul, as well as fritters and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles). You can help yourself to as much as you need, so it's great to come here on a day you want to eat generously.

## Ordering the barley rice set and the grilled soy-sauce pork set

We ordered the barley rice set and the grilled soy sauce pork set!

![Full spread of the barley rice set and grilled soy sauce pork set](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-08-1gpef-900.webp)

At first they set out the barley rice and cheonggukjang, and then you bring over whatever namul and side dishes you like from the self-serve bar, mixing them into the barley rice however you prefer.

![Basic setting of barley rice and cheonggukjang](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-09-5j25b-900.webp)

The set comes with savory cheonggukjang, and the soybeans still had texture, making it really savory and delicious. Picking out various namul and mixing it all with the rice — this really is the charm of Korean food. haha

### The rich sesame oil set on every table at Boriook

Every table has this rich sesame oil, and the aroma was so strong I had to take a photo of it haha. I especially love nutty flavors, so sesame oil is a big deal for me wherever I go, and this place totally passed the test! It was really rich with zero funky off-smell.

I thought barley rice alone might feel a bit lacking, so I added the grilled soy sauce pork, and the combination together was pretty great. Since the pork is seasoned with soy sauce, it went really well with the rice too.

Mixing namul into the barley rice and then adding the pork on the side made for a pretty filling meal.

## Fritters and gungjung tteokbokki at the self-serve bar

Personally, the most impressive part of Boriook for me was the self-serve bar.

![Namul dishes lined up at the Boriook self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-15-12k4j-900.webp)

![Side dish display at the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-16-1x3sy-900.webp)

![Rice and soup corner at the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-17-1pb7s-900.webp)

On top of rice and various namul, there were also fritters and gungjung tteokbokki (royal stir-fried rice cakes) available, so you can use as much as you want.

![Fritter corner at the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-18-waw7m-900.webp)

![Gungjung tteokbokki and japchae at the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-19-10zub-900.webp)

Loading up on namul in the barley rice and having clean, non-greasy fritters in between made it feel like a full spread. Best of all, if you run out, you can just go get more without feeling awkward about it.

![Plate of fritters and namul brought from the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-20-x2guf-900.webp)

![Dessert corner at Boriook Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar/suwon-yeongtong-boriok-sesame-oil-selfbar-21-1fxcj-900.webp)

There's also a solid dessert corner, so you don't even need to go to a separate café afterward!

## Is Boriook Main Branch in Yeongtong worth a visit?

Boriook Main Branch was a good spot to go for a satisfying Korean meal in Suwon. If you like loading barley rice with lots of namul, the barley rice set would suit you well. And if you want to eat a bit more heartily, I'd also recommend ordering the grilled soy sauce pork set alongside it.

In particular, being able to use rice, namul, japchae, fritters and more unlimited from the self-serve bar made it great for eating generously. That day, I loaded my barley rice with namul and added pork on the side, and left having had a really filling meal.
