Walking into Ilpum Irojeong, the interior was much bigger and cleaner than I expected. The private rooms were well set up too, so it seemed like a great spot for a cozy family meal or for group gatherings and work dinners.

Ilpum Irojeong's signature is the loach soup set, and I really liked how you can add fish or pork to it as you like! We ordered the pork loach soup set and added grilled mackerel on top.

True to a proper set-meal restaurant, the basic side dishes were laid out neatly and cleanly, and the pork had no gamey smell at all — soft and tender enough to melt in your mouth.

### Is the grilled mackerel at Ilpum Irojeong really boneless?

What really impressed me was the grilled mackerel! The bones had been cleanly removed. I usually like fish but avoid it because picking out bones is such a hassle — this I could eat with total ease, and it was also perfect to serve the kids, both convenient and delicious.

Finally, the main event — the loach soup — arrived! The broth was so rich and savory that just looking at it felt like a health boost.

I grew up in Gyeongsang-do, so I really love adding sancho powder (Korean pepper powder) to loach soup, and the sancho powder set out on every table wasn't your typical store-bought stuff — it was so well kept and fragrant that I was genuinely impressed! Loading it in brought the flavor to life.

Minced garlic and chili were also there in generous amounts, so everyone could mix the soup to their own taste — that part was perfect too.

We also ordered a potato pancake on the side for the kids, and it looked exactly like a round pizza! Crispy outside and moist inside — the kids happily munched through it like a snack.

Honestly, I really wanted to try the octopus pancake too, but unfortunately it was sold out when we went. Disappointing, but we promised ourselves we'd come back and try it on our next trip to Milyang.
