## In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a premium gyukatsu (Japanese-style fried beef cutlet) restaurant on the basement level of the Obelisk shopping arcade at Mapo Station in Seoul. On an evening just before the fireworks festival, the wait ran over 30 minutes, and the 47,000-won yakiniku set was ordered split between gyukatsu and yakiniku, grilled at the table on an individual bangjja brassware brazier and finished with pork-bone-broth ochazuke. For a special-occasion dinner, it is better to book Gyudo ahead through Naver Reservation or Catch Table.

Today I want to introduce my go-to-again-and-again spot, the premium gyukatsu specialist Gyudo! Whenever I make plans near Mapo Station, this is my pick!

![Image of Gyudo, a gyukatsu specialist near Mapo Station](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-02-qmmfo-736.webp)

Bring your friends here and it's a guaranteed win — everyone loves it and always says "I'm coming back again" 😊 (Honestly I've overheard the next table saying the exact same thing...) This time I went with my boyfriend right before watching the fireworks festival! Let me give you the full review today.

## Where Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is, and its hours

- Address: 서울특별시 마포구 마포대로 33 오벨리스크 APT 상가 지하1층
- Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00 (be sure to check break time and last order before visiting!)
- Reservations: Naver Reservation available
- Parking: Obelisk apartment underground parking available

There's a passage that connects directly from Mapo Station to the Obelisk arcade, so you don't even need to go outside! Amazing accessibility for anyone on foot, right? I especially love that you don't have to step outside on rainy or scorching days.

## Is there a wait? Why booking is worth it

![Waiting line outside Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-03-8wct1-966.webp)

We happened to go right before the fireworks festival near Mapo Station, so we waited over 30 minutes, ugh. Everyone waiting kept saying the same thing: "I should've put my name down before leaving home..."

On weekdays it's more relaxed, but on weekends or special occasions like ours there can be a wait, so I'd recommend booking ahead via Catch Table or Naver Reservation!

## Inside Gyudo: mood and seating

![Interior of Gyudo decorated with Japanese-style props](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-04-b2a7j-900.webp)

![Gyudo interior with fox mascot decoration](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-05-15itf-900.webp)

Gyudo's interior catches your eye with Japanese-style décor and a fox mascot decoration scattered throughout — it felt like stepping into an izakaya alley.

There are solo-friendly counter tables as well as group seating. And since it's a grill-it-yourself restaurant, smell is always a worry, right? I always stress about that too, but Gyudo has a thoughtful coat storage cabinet. Love this kind of attention to detail. 👀🖤🖤

## Grilling your own beef on an individual brassware brazier

Gyudo isn't a franchise — it's a premium gyukatsu specialist run only through directly operated stores.

Every table has a custom-made personal brass brazier set up, so you can grill it exactly to your taste! I found it tastier lightly cooked rather than well-done, haha! Since you cook it however you like, how good is that! Lol

## What comes with the 47,000-won yakiniku set

![Full spread of Gyudo's yakiniku set](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-13-1pir6-900.webp)

We ordered the yakiniku set (₩47,000)! I got gyukatsu, my boyfriend got yakiniku! The set comes with gamtae myeongnan (seaweed-pollock roe) on the side — make sure to try this together with your meal!

The gyukatsu is smoked over wood in an offset smoker, so it has a subtle barbecue aroma. The batter is thin and crispy, so the fat and juices come through fully!

Different flavors, both delicious! 🤭

## Made in-house, from the sauces to the radish salad

![Myeongi wasabi, radish salad, and spicy sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-17-1xlqt-900.webp)

They said the myeongi wasabi, radish salad, and spicy sauce are all 100% homemade! The sauces are genuinely delicious. That spicy sauce actually has a curry aroma to it. All three pair really well with the gyukatsu. The set also includes onsen tamago (hot spring egg), and mixing it into the rice with the meat is heavenly. I always eat it this way 🤭🤭

Ordering the set also gets you extra gamtae myeongnan, which cranks the umami up by like +10. Please, please try eating it together!

## Choose your broth: the self-serve bar and ochazuke finish

![Self-serve bar with three broth options at Gyudo](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-19-9diq6-900.webp)

![Barley tea, pork bone, and bonito broths](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-20-eus90-900.webp)

At what looks like a self-serve bar, there are three types of broth — barley tea, pork bone broth, and bonito broth. Pick whichever suits your taste and pour it over rice for a final ochazuke!

![Refillable cauldron rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting/gyudo-mapo-yakiniku-set-waiting-21-zqs4a-900.webp)

Right next to it is refillable cauldron rice! It would be a shame to run out of rice with gyukatsu this good for eating rice with. Refills are available. The rice is a single variety, Sindongjin rice, cooked from premium to super-premium grade, so it's delicious even plain. You can tell just by looking how sticky and glossy it is — so appetizing.

I finished mine with the pork bone broth — clear and clean, easy to enjoy without feeling heavy.

## Small touches that bring in diners of every age

From individual cutlery pouches to flake-topping tea bags to the coat storage, you can feel the care put into every detail here. The atmosphere is calm and has a nice mood, making it perfect for dates or blind dates too. When you visit, you'll see all age groups — from kids to elderly folks — which makes it a great pick for family gatherings too. Plenty of solo diners, plenty of people with friends or partners like me — truly a place that satisfies everyone, regardless of age or gender!

For anyone searching for restaurants near Mapo Station, in Mapo, or near Gongdeok Station, Gyudo is my personal 'go-back-again' spot that never disappoints no matter how many times I visit. Whether it's solo dining near Mapo Station, lunch, a family meal, or a blind date or date course, it suits all of them — I confidently recommend it! 👏👏👏
