Ikseon-dong bakery on a hot day: coffee bread eaten frozen, Munhwa

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a bakery on the hanok street of Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. On a hot day of exploring Ikseon-dong, the writer took home injeolmi (roasted soybean rice cake) bread, walnut bread and coffee bread, and found the coffee cream in Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread tasted even better frozen. The shop is small and lets in two groups at a time, but there was no wait that day.

Gangnam Korean BBQ with a king oyster mushroom add-on: Sansol

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is a Gangwon-sourced Korean BBQ restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Two diners ordered 2 servings of Sansol aged pork belly with added king oyster mushrooms, Gangwon-style makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) and Cheorwon Odae rice, and staff grilled everything from start to finish, including the kimchi and vegetables. Downdraft ventilation kept the smoke smell out of clothes, making Sansol Sinnonhyeon an easy, comfortable meal.

Irwon-dong tonkatsu at weekend opening time, cheese katsu set: Sioldon

Sioldon Irwon Branch is a premium tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant on the Food Street in Irwon-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, an 8-minute walk from Daecheong Station Exit 4. Arriving right at weekend opening time, the writer ordered the mixed katsu set (sirloin and tenderloin) and the cheese katsu set at the kiosk, and the cheese katsu held a long, stretchy pull of melted cheese. Tasting each cutlet plain first and then dipping it in Himalayan pink salt was the best way to eat at Sioldon.
