Tteum Café by Oneplay Suwon Station is a specialty coffee café of about 200 pyeong inside the Lady Furniture showroom, a 5-minute walk from Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. The writer tried a cheese soufflé cake, an iced café latte and the café's signature Roma espresso (strapazzato), served in a cup dusted with cocoa powder. Verdict: at Tteum Café, the Roma espresso was far more impressive than the latte.
Gohyang Sogalbijjim Gwacheon is a galbijjim (braised short rib) and galbitang (short rib soup) restaurant near Exit 11 of Government Complex Gwacheon Station in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. The writer shared a ₩13,900 jumbo galbijjim and a ₩11,900 galbitang, then added ₩7,000 tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) and ₩2,000 potato noodles; the tender ribs and tasty kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) stood out. Gohyang Sogalbijjim Gwacheon is a well-priced meal for all ages where every dish satisfied.
Sukseonghwangga Yongin (숙성육관 용인 둔전점) is an aged pork Korean BBQ restaurant in Pogok-eup, Yongin, about 10 minutes by car from Everland, where staff grill the meat for you from start to finish. Dining with a child, the writer ordered 2 servings of Yongin pork belly, pork jowl, extra fresh minari (water dropwort), steamed egg and mul naengmyeon (cold noodles), and was happy with the high chairs, free refills of minari and shishito peppers, and the truffle oil ice cream dessert. For families looking for an easy meat dinner after a day at Everland, Sukseonghwangga Yongin is worth adding to the list.
Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is a Japanese restaurant serving gyukatsu (beef cutlet) and rice bowls at Avenue France near Gwanggyojungang Station in Suwon. On a weekend lunch date, the writer and her husband had tenderloin gyukatsu, which melted in the mouth after being seared with butter on a mini brazier, and a tsukune (Japanese meatball) bowl that never felt greasy once mixed with egg yolk and spicy sauce. Gyuen-dang is worth recommending as the start of a weekend date course followed by Galleria shopping and a walk in Gwanggyo Lake Park.
Nonchalant Lounge is a Western-style restaurant and wine bar in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, across from the Suwon Traditional Culture Hall. On this visit, a regular who often comes with friends ordered carbonara, bulgogi risotto, cheese-sauce karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken, served only after 5 PM) and a brownie ice cream dessert, and was happy with every dish. Nonchalant Lounge is a solid pick for a date or blind date in Haenggung-dong when you want both atmosphere and good food.
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch (고등어명품이되다 수원점) is a Korean restaurant on Seobu-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, that grills fish in a wood-fired oven. On a day with a heavy rain warning, the writer dropped by at an in-between hour, since there was no break time, and ate grilled mackerel (16,000 won), grilled Spanish mackerel (18,000 won) and gochujang bulgogi (13,000 won), and got rice cakes for the restaurant's 1st anniversary. Even a writer who rarely enjoys grilled fish finished a whole bowl of rice at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda, with no fishy taste at all.
Café Diaz is a café known for its cakes, on the 4th floor of the HP Building in Ingye-dong, Suwon, near City Hall Station. On a second visit, the writer walked in one evening without a reservation and picked up a whole Strawberry Mongttang Cake (딸기몽땅케이크) for an anniversary. The writer was happy with how the cake's dairy fresh cream paired with its moderately moist sponge. Café Diaz is a good stop when you suddenly need an anniversary cake near Suwon City Hall Station.
Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두) is a Pyeongyang-style dumpling restaurant in Paju, Gyeonggi, near Lotte Premium Outlets Paju, Paju Book City and Heyri Art Village. On a late weekday lunch the writer found Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu full. The writer ordered a plate of beef shank suyuk (boiled sliced beef) and Hanwoo jjabagi made with 1++ grade Korean beef, and was happy enough with the side dishes to refill the white kimchi again and again. For a family meal with parents looking for something mild and nourishing, the beef shank suyuk and Hanwoo jjabagi combination at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is a good fit.
Artis Theme Park is an indoor zoo with animal feeding experiences on the 9th floor of Sinyu Medi Plaza in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a weekend visit to Artis Theme Park with a 6-year-old and her husband, the writer packed a feed lunchbox, touched doctor fish, used feeding coupons for freshwater rays and spotted seals, and completed the stamp book to earn a souvenir. Artis Theme Park is a great indoor outing in Dongtan for spending a weekend with kids, whatever the weather.
Sosam208 Homaesil (쏘삼208 호매실점) is a stone-grill pork belly restaurant in Homaesil-dong, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, where cheese is poured into a volcano-crater-shaped stone grill for dipping the meat. On a Friday evening, a family of four ordered the 500g mixed stone grill medium set, then added pork belly, pork jowl, naengmyeon (cold noodles) and snowflake cheese fried rice, and Sosam208 staff grilled everything from start to finish so everyone could relax. Sosam208 Homaesil is a good pick in Homaesil for a family dinner or a late-night meat meetup without the work of grilling.
Kueodeukkutteu (쿠어드꾸뜨) is a new Western restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, that feels like a brunch café by day and a wine bar in the evening. On a cool day, the writer sat on Kueodeukkutteu's outdoor terrace with burrata jambon French toast, Manjo truffle pea risotto and a bottle of white wine (35,000 won). For a terrace wine date in Haenggung-dong, Kueodeukkutteu is worth it, and the writer plans to return.
Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers Taejeon Branch (신백옥양꼬치 태전점) is a lamb skewer restaurant on Taebong-ro in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. On a chilly evening the writer ordered the Value Couple Set (original and seasoned lamb skewers, a small guobaorou (sweet-and-sour fried pork) and Chinese cucumber salad) and won 5th prize, a retro snack, in the in-store prize draw. With lamb skewers free of gamey smell, a generous set and small perks, Sinbaegok Taejeon Branch made for an evening worth repeating.
