When You're Craving Something Different in Tongyeong, Brown Hands Tongyeong

Haha, I've been really into the fun of saving on food costs lately... But I still have a very full-on foodie appetite 🐽, so I only go to places that look delicious, okay?! I had such an amazing meal at this ocean-view restaurant 😆

When you're planning a Tongyeong trip, you know that point where you get stuck, right? Sashimi, mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup), Chungmu gimbap (seaweed rice rolls)... there are so many things that come to mind when you think of Tongyeong, but then comes the day when you're like, “I want something a little different today.” I found the answer for that: Brown Hands Tongyeong (브라운핸즈 통영) 🧀

Brown Hands Tongyeong restaurant

It's an Italian restaurant on the second floor of Tongyeong Concert Hall, and not just one of the best Western restaurants in Tongyeong—it was one of the most memorable among Western restaurants nationwide. Seriously,,

Second-Floor Location at Tongyeong Concert Hall and Sea Views

A bright yellow “Brown Hands” sign is right on the Tongyeong Concert Hall building.

It's right near Stanford Hotel Tongyeong, so hotel guests can walk over, too. But wow, this view. We went around 6 p.m. on a weekday, and it was exactly sunset time. If you're looking for a restaurant or view café in Tongyeong, keep your eye on this place.

Is parking easy?

Parking area at Tongyeong Concert Hall

Zero parking stress. You can use the Tongyeong Concert Hall car park for free, and there is both a first-floor pilotis area and a very spacious building car park. The ground is clean, too, and you won't have to circle around looking for a spot. Parking is always a concern at restaurants around Tongyeong's old downtown, but here, just park and come right up.

A Spacious Restaurant and Café Zone

Once you get up to the second floor, the first surprise is how spacious it is. One side is the restaurant and the other is the café zone, with high ceilings and full-height windows, so it never feels stuffy. Since it's inside the concert hall, the atmosphere is just so nice.

We made a reservation in advance. They had set up the long window-side table with a “RESERVED” sign. They also had a high chair and children's tableware all set out, so it's great for a family meal, too!

See this spot here? It's a zone where you can stretch out in camping chairs while looking at the sea. Sitting here with coffee after your meal is pure healing 🥹

There is also a lounge area on one side with books and plants. It would be nice to come alone and read, and it seems like a relaxed place to spend time with kids, too.

From Wheel-Cheese Pasta to Arugula Pizza

Signature menu posters

There are signature-menu posters all along the front of the counter: ghee butter steak, wheel-cheese pasta, and arugula pizza. I seriously had such a hard time choosingㅠ They all looked delicious.

Wheel-Cheese Pasta Tossed Right in Front of You

Grana Padano wheel-cheese pasta

Wow... look at this. They cut a whole Grana Padano cheese wheel in half and use it as is, adding the pasta, egg yolk, and pancetta inside, then tossing it right in front of you. It was overwhelmingly number one among the pastas I've had lately.

Wheel-cheese pasta with pancetta

No exaggeration—I think it was even better than the carbonara I ate in Europe? The salty pancetta gives little bites of chew and keeps everything balanced. If you found this while searching for pasta at a Tongyeong restaurant, you absolutely have to order this. It was insane,,

Ghee Butter Steak with Baguette

The second star: ghee butter steak. Ghee is clarified butter, made by leaving only the milk fat behind. It has a higher smoke point than regular butter, so it doesn't burn even when seared at high heat, while the rich buttery flavor remains.

Look at that doneness. Perfect...!!! It was crisply seared on the outside, while the inside was rosy and moist. The butter flavor had soaked through the entire steak, so it was more than enough without sauce.

But the real highlight was this combination. Put steak and grilled vegetables on the baguette that comes on the hot plate, then take a bite. Wow, it was fantastic. Buttery bread + meat juices + the tang of grilled tomato all burst together at once—the combination was truly so good.

Rich Squid-Ink Risotto Without Any Fishiness

Squid-ink risotto
Seafood squid-ink risotto

The distinctive rich flavor of squid ink really comes through, with no fishiness at all. The rice had a slight al dente bite, which made the texture great, and the risotto was packed with seafood!! Putting it on the plate with steak worked wonderfully, too—the salty ink and the meat went so well together.

Arugula Pizza That Reset the Palate

Wood-fired arugula pizza

This pizza comes out of a wood-fired oven. The dough's edge had a light char and smoky flavor, and it was thin but chewy, so I ended up eating every last bit.

Pizza with arugula and tomato sauce

The arugula on top was so fresh, and the tang of tomato sauce + the sweetness of balsamic + the saltiness of cheese came together perfectly. It was also perfect for refreshing the palate between the richer dishes :)

Coffee and Even a Birthday Cake After the Meal

What I really loved here was that we didn't have to go to a separate café after eating everything. You can keep ordering café drinks in the same space.

When we ordered coffee, they cleared our finished dishes right away. Such thoughtful service!!

And it was my mom's birthday that day. When they saw the cake we brought, they kept it refrigerated during our meal. I asked whether it would be okay to put candles in it, and they said it was fine to eat it there, too.

We blew out the candles and ate the cake there, too 🥹 I was genuinely so grateful ㅠㅠㅠㅠ Even just coming to enjoy coffee and dessert at this Tongyeong restaurant and view café would be lovely.

A Post-Meal Walk at Tongyeong Concert Hall

Post-meal walk at Tongyeong Concert Hall

After we finished eating, we walked a lap around Tongyeong Concert Hall to digest. The building itself is beautiful, and the seaside walking path is well laid out, so

the meal → walk course simply completes itself. Tongyeong attractions are all nearby, too, so it's easy to plan your route.

Good Things to Know Before You Go

  • Brown Hands Tongyeong is on the second floor of Tongyeong Concert Hall, at 38 Keunbalgae 1-gil, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.
  • Firefighters, police officers, and military personnel receive 20% off, while Tongyeong residents receive 10% off every Wednesday.

A memorable meal in Tongyeong that has the view, service, and flavor all covered. The wheel-cheese pasta alone is reason enough to come, and add the ghee butter steak-and-baguette combination and your evening is a success. Since it's inside the concert hall, there seemed to be lots of international guests, too; maybe that's why the standard for flavor is kept so high.

Would I revisit? Absolutely 🙌 It's perfect for brunch or dinner if you're staying at Stanford Hotel Tongyeong. If you're visiting Tongyeong and looking for a great Western restaurant, I wholeheartedly recommend this place; and if you live in Tongyeong, come here when you want to make an occasion of it. Save it first, then go 🧀❤
