Fire squid bossam and soju at Sugi Sogeum, a Gyeongsan Daehak-ro pub

Sugi Sogeum Silbijip (수기소금 실비집) is a Korean pub on Daehak-ro 59-gil, in front of Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. The writer ordered one fire squid bossam (boiled pork with spicy stir-fried squid), 1 bottle of soju and 2 bowls of rice; when the writer asked at the counter while paying, staff said the rice was free, and the deep bowls held a generous portion. With mild boiled pork and spicy stir-fried squid on one plate, Sugi Sogeum Silbijip is an easy spot for a relaxed soju night near Yeungnam University.

Daegu ssambap restaurant a picky eater loved: Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap

Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap (임가네우렁쌈밥) is a ssambap (leaf-wrap rice) restaurant specializing in snail ssamjang, located on Seochon-ro in Dong-gu, Daegu, on the way to Palgongsan. After a satisfying meal there with her husband last summer, the writer returned with her mother and her picky child. They ordered the 17,000-won-per-person 'Dangsindo' set of boiled pork, grilled mackerel and snail ssamjang with wrap greens, and the child skipped the ham brought from home to finish half a bowl of rice. Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap is a good fit for a Palgongsan family outing lunch when adults and kids need to share one menu.

Daegu open sandwich café in Bongsan-dong: romesco veg wins at Dento

Dento is an open sandwich brunch café in Bongsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, near Banwoldang Station. On a solo visit, the writer ordered five bite-size open sandwiches, aioli baby potatoes and drip coffee, and of the five, the romesco roasted vegetables tasted best despite their looks. Dento's bite-size open sandwiches are a good pick on a day when you want to try a little of several flavors.

Gyeongsan pork BBQ even my toddler ate: Gourmet Set, Kkotdwaeji

Kkotdwaeji Sikdang Gyeongsan Branch (꽃돼지식당 경산점) is a pork BBQ restaurant on Seongam-ro in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. At Kkotdwaeji Sikdang, we ordered the Gourmet Set, non-alcoholic beer, soju and fried rice with our 29-month-old, Roeun, who usually won't eat tough meat but ate the pork really well that day. With several cuts to share and fried rice to finish, Kkotdwaeji Sikdang Gyeongsan Branch is a good fit for a family meal out with young kids.

Kim Kwang-seok Street Korean meal, rainy-day mushroom jeon: Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch (향택 대봉점) is a Korean restaurant in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, near Kim Kwang-seok Street and Bangcheon Market. On a rainy day the writer and her husband ordered Spanish mackerel gondre rice and herring roe bibim noodles, and the hanpan mushroom jeon (mixed mushroom pancake, ₩6,000) they received through a Naver receipt review event was so crispy her husband called it the perfect makgeolli snack. Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a good Kim Kwang-seok Street spot for a full spread of rice, noodles and a jeon on the side.

Haeundae Western restaurant: pizza dipped in pumpkin soup, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Haeundae Branch is a European-style Western restaurant on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae, Busan. The writer had a late lunch at Bueokgan with her mother and her 29-month-old, switching the couple's dish set to carbonara and basil margherita pizza for a total of 54,000 won, and was happy with the private parking lot and the wood-fired pizza. The pumpkin soup at Bueokgan is thin and noticeably sweet but works well as a dip for the pizza, and Bueokgan Haeundae Branch suits both family meals with young kids and dates.

Daegu dog café near Jungangno Station: yuja cake with a kid, Daenghaus

Daenghaus&Bingsuking is a dog-friendly café on Jungang-daero 81-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu, and visitors without a dog of their own can use the café too. The writer brought a dog-loving child to Daenghaus&Bingsuking, ordered a latte, a vanilla latte and yuja (citron) cake, and spent the visit watching the dogs up close and tossing them toys. Daenghaus&Bingsuking makes a fun, different café outing for families who love dogs but don't have one.

Gumi black goat soup restaurant, kids' beef seaweed soup: Irojeong

Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant on Bakjeonghui-ro in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, specializing in loach soup and black goat soup. Arriving around 1:45 pm on a weekend with her mother, husband and child, the writer waited behind 12 groups, then ordered two single servings of black goat soup (18,000 won each), a Hanwoo beef seaweed soup for the child (11,000 won) and a half plate of warm boiled pork (12,000 won); even as a smell-sensitive eater, she found the black goat soup spicy and free of any gamey smell. The seaweed soup was light on beef because of the late hour, but with a large parking lot, a rest area and a play room, Irojeong is a solid choice for a nourishing family meal with kids.

Beomeo-dong Daegu Korean restaurant: pork lunch before a dog café

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a fire-grilled Korean restaurant on Beomeocheon-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. On a holiday, the writer and their child stopped in for lunch before a dog café. They ate smoky fire-grilled jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) from a deep stone plate with ssam (lettuce wraps), cheonggukjang doenjang stew (fermented soybean stew) and a big-bowl bibim (mixed rice) of bean sprouts and radish salad. Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a good Beomeo-dong pick when you want a filling meal of smoky pork, rice and stew.

Raw fish restaurant in Jisan-dong, Daegu: mulhoe lunch at Paldakpaldak

Paldakpaldak (팔딱팔딱) is a live raw fish restaurant on Dongdaegu-ro 12-gil in Jisan-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, that keeps fish bought at auction at the Pohang fish market in its tanks. On a weekday lunch visit, a couple ordered the hoedeopbap (sashimi rice bowl) and spicy fish stew set for 12,000 won and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) for 15,000 won, and Paldakpaldak also brought out mussel soup and braised seasoned flounder. Paldakpaldak's lunch special is a great-value, refreshing meal for a hot summer day.
