Jeonju street snack for octopus skewers and sikhye: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is a street-food snack shop in Jeonju, Jeonbuk, serving octopus skewers and fried octopus bites. We ate a katsuobushi octopus skewer with sikhye at the table outside, then took cheese mungangjeong back to the hotel. A convenient, light stop while exploring Jeonju Hanok Village.

Octopus skewers in an alley of Jeonju Hanok Village

Jeonju Hanok Village is fun to look around, of course, but you can't leave out the fun of wandering its little alleys and buying snacks one by one either 😋

While we were wandering around the alleys of Jeonju Hanok Village looking for something simple to eat, an octopus skewer caught our eye, so we stopped by Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch (문꼬치문강정 전주한옥마을점).

Visiting Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch

The shop is on Eunhaeng-ro in the Hanok Village, so it was in a great spot to drop into while sightseeing. You could check the menu right out front, making it easy to grab a snack as you passed by. Best of all, there were tables and chairs in front of the shop, so it wasn't just a takeout-only spot—we could sit down briefly and eat what we'd ordered.

Looking over the kiosk menu, octopus skewers and mungangjeong—fried, sauce-coated octopus bites—were the main items, with chicken skewers available too. The octopus skewers came in more than one flavor, with toppings such as katsuobushi and cheese, and the mungangjeong could be chosen to suit your taste as well, so there was more variety than we expected.

The skewers looked easy to hold and eat right away, while the mungangjeong came in cups that seemed convenient for sharing or taking away. They also had drinks that pair well with snacks, including sikhye (a sweet Korean rice drink) and slushies, so there was no need to go elsewhere for a drink.

Ordered octopus skewer and mungangjeong

After some deliberation, we ordered a katsuobushi octopus skewer, cheese mungangjeong, a drink set, and an extra cup of sikhye. We chose one octopus skewer and one mungangjeong so we could try octopus in two different styles 😋

A warm katsuobushi octopus skewer

The katsuobushi octopus skewer was cooked warm to order, with plenty of sauce and katsuobushi bonito flakes piled over the octopus.

The octopus pieces were bite-sized and threaded onto the skewer, making them easy to pull off one by one. Once you bit into them, you could really enjoy octopus's signature chewy texture.

The sweet-savory sauce and katsuobushi added a lovely savory depth too.

Since it was on a skewer, it was easy to carry around while sightseeing in the Hanok Village. We chose to sit at one of the tables set up in front of the shop for a moment, though.

After all that walking, it was nice to have somewhere to sit down, even just briefly.

Katsuobushi octopus skewer and sikhye

The sikhye we ordered with the katsuobushi octopus skewer was delicious too.

Taking a sip of cool, sweet sikhye after a salty octopus skewer was the best combination.

Jeonju Hanok Village has so much street food that's easy to eat while walking around, and this octopus skewer was another good one to try.

Cheese mungangjeong packed up for the hotel

Rather than eating the cheese mungangjeong right away, we packed it up and brought it back to our hotel.

We've had plenty of dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken), but fried octopus bites were a little unfamiliar, so we were curious about the flavor. The octopus was fried in bite-sized pieces and finished with sauce and cheese, and it was easy to pick up and eat one piece at a time.

The coating was crispy while the octopus inside was chewy, which made the texture fun. With the sweet-savory sauce and nutty cheese, of course it was tasty.

We ate ours after returning to the hotel, but since this one comes topped with cheese, I think it would be even better eaten warm right after ordering, when the cheese can stretch nicely.

After ordering both the katsuobushi octopus skewer and the cheese mungangjeong, we were glad we had chosen one of each. Even though they used the same octopus, the cooking methods gave them different flavors and textures.

If you're looking for something you can pick up and eat right away, the octopus skewer would be a good choice. If you want something a little more filling or want to take it away, go for the mungangjeong. You can order sikhye or other drinks alongside it, and there is space to eat briefly in front of the shop, so it was an easy stop while looking around the Hanok Village.
