Korean lunch by Dongdaegu Station: gondeure rice vs yukhoe, Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek (향택) main branch is a Korean restaurant in Dong-gu, Daegu, in an alley across from Dongdaegu Station and Shinsegae Department Store Daegu, serving rice bowls and bibimbap made with familiar ingredients like gondeure (thistle greens), Spanish mackerel, yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) and eggplant. The writer shared the Spanish mackerel gondeure rice and the yukhoe bibimbap at Hyangtaek, ₩14,000 each: the mackerel was a little dry, but the gondeure's flavor and texture beat expectations, and the yukhoe bibimbap tastes best with plenty of sauce. With a neat table setting, bar seats and tablet ordering, Hyangtaek is worth a visit for a Korean lunch near Dongdaegu Station.

Daegu ssambap restaurant, mackerel & snail ssamjang wraps: Imga-ne

Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap is a Korean ureong ssambap (leafy wraps with river-snail ssamjang) restaurant in Songjeong-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, on the road to Palgongsan. At Imga-ne Ureong Ssambap we ordered the 'Eat a Lot' set for two: grilled bulgogi, grilled mackerel, snail ssamjang, stone pot rice, seaweed soup, side dishes and a wide range of wrap greens. The geotjeori (fresh kimchi) was a little salty, but wraps of mackerel and snail ssamjang and a sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) finish made it a generous, filling meal.

Dongseong-ro ramen shop, Daegu: tonkotsu no longer salty at Ryusenso

Ryusenso Dongseong-ro is a Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen shop on Gongpyeong-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. After finding the broth too salty on an earlier visit, the writer returned and compared the basic Ryusenso (extra scallions and chashu) with the spicy Ryusenso Kara level 1 (extra chashu and ajitamago), each ₩14,000. This time the seasoning was balanced and the savory broth came through. Verdict: Ryusenso Dongseong-ro is worth a second visit even if saltiness once kept you away.
