Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is a jokbal (braised pig's trotter) restaurant on the Suwan district restaurant street in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. On a weekend evening at 8pm the writer ordered the Friend Set half-and-half in large size for 58,000 won, which brought old-style king jokbal and cold jokbal with mustard sauce, a pot of sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), and complimentary makguksu noodles and rice balls. Freshly sliced jokbal in the dining room beat the usual delivery order, and apart from the lack of a dedicated parking lot, Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is a solid pick for a night out with friends.

Gwangsan eel restaurant, 6pm wait and 1kg for ₩50,840: Yuil Jangeo

Yuil Jangeo is an eel restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan, Gwangju, where you pick your own pack from the showcase and the kitchen pre-grills it before it reaches your table. Three of us arrived at 6pm around Malbok, the last dog day of summer, and ordered a 1kg pack of 4 eels for ₩50,840 with mul-naengmyeon, bibim-naengmyeon and a ₩5,900 dessert eel soup; there was a waitlist, but a party of three got in fairly quickly. With a large parking lot and private rooms, Yuil Jangeo is an easy pick for a group meal.
