Chuseok lunch for four at a Busan jjamppong restaurant: Songjeong Dol

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a stone-plate jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles) restaurant on Songjeong Gwanggeogol-ro in Haeundae, Busan. On the first day of the Chuseok holiday, after a loop around Songjeong Beach, four diners ordered two servings each of scorched-rice dol jjamppong (26,000 won) and dol jjajang (24,000 won), both arriving bubbling on a 250-degree stone plate with a crust of scorched rice at the bottom. Spice level 2 of 3 was already quite hot at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong, so level 1 and a mild jajang sauce are the safer picks.

Dal-dong, Ulsan milmyeon for four on Chuseok: Samsam Milmyeon

Samsam Milmyeon Main Branch is a milmyeon (wheat cold noodle) restaurant on Hwahap-ro 125beon-gil in Dal-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan. A phone call confirmed the Chuseok holiday hours — closing at 5pm instead of the usual 9pm — so a group of four arrived just before closing and ordered 3 mul-milmyeon (cold broth) and 1 bibim-milmyeon (spicy mixed), which came with two to three times the usual pile of shredded cucumber and noodles as thin as somyeon. Even judged by Busan milmyeon standards, this was the best milmyeon eaten anywhere in Ulsan.
