Gwangju jjukkumi buffet with sauce-soaked whole garlic: Sin Jjukkumi

Sin Jjukkumi Duam Branch (신쭈꾸미 두암점) is an all-you-can-eat jjukkumi (baby octopus) and pork belly buffet in Duam-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. Craving something spicy, the writer picked wrap fillings from the Sin Jjukkumi self-serve corner, wrapped perilla leaf, pickled radish, baby octopus, sweet corn, sauce-soaked whole garlic and mayonnaise together, and finished with fried rice mixed with a mashed boiled egg. Even for someone who doesn't enjoy all-you-can-eat buffets, Sin Jjukkumi Duam Branch is worth a return visit for the octopus quality and the fun of building your own combos.

Pasta date in Gwangju Suwan: napa Caesar & poached egg, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Suwan Branch (부엌간 수완점) is an Italian-forest-themed pasta and Western restaurant in the Suwan district of Gwangsan, Gwangju. On a date at Bueokgan Suwan Branch, the writer ordered three plates: a napa cabbage Caesar salad with an added poached egg, shrimp anchovy oil pasta and abalone cream risotto. The Caesar salad was the clear favourite, though ordering the oil pasta and cream risotto together felt a little rich. With its atmosphere and better-than-solid food, Bueokgan Suwan Branch is worth recommending for a date, a blind date or a wedding-invitation meetup in Suwan.

Sangmu, Gwangju pasta restaurant: napa cabbage Caesar salad, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch (부엌간 상무점) is an Eastern European-style pasta and brunch restaurant in the Sangmu district of Seo-gu, Gwangju. On Chuseok Day at lunchtime, the writer visited Bueokgan Sangmu Branch with her heavily pregnant sister, waited about 10 minutes for a table and about 40 minutes for the food, and shared a napa cabbage Caesar salad, a shrimp anchovy oil pasta and a seafood tomato pasta. The restaurant was packed for the holiday, but staff warned about the wait in advance, and the food was good enough that nothing was left on the plates.

Chuseok sisters' gopchang stew in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju: Kim Taeju

Kim Taeju Seonsan Gopchang, Yongbong Branch is a Gumi Seonsan-style gopchang jeongol (beef intestine hot pot) restaurant in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. Over the Chuseok holiday, the writer and her heavily pregnant sister ate the full course there: 2 servings of gopchang stew, then a rice bowl and fried rice. After a wait of more than 20 minutes, with bone broth added once more and reduced, the stew became rich and spicy. The verdict: mixing the stew into the rice bowl tasted even better than the fried rice.
