4-step self-grilling at Buk-gu, Gwangju eel restaurant: Deokeun Jangeo

Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch is an eel butcher-shop restaurant on Haseo-ro in Buk-gu, Gwangju, where diners pick their own raw eel at the ground-floor direct-sales market and charcoal-grill it themselves on the second floor. Deokeun Jangeo serves antibiotic-free, HACCP-certified Korean Japonica freshwater eel, with a table setting fee of 4,000 won per adult and 2,000 won for children in elementary school or younger. Walking up and down the stairs is a hassle, but the quality and price of the eel make the system make sense.

Rainy day pho near Chonnam Univ, Gwangju: brisket vs yangji, Wolmidang

Wolmidang Gwangju Chonnam National University Branch is a Vietnamese pho (rice noodle soup) restaurant near the Buk-gu Office intersection in Buk-gu, Gwangju. On a rainy weekend two bowls were shared — cha dol yangji (thin brisket) pho and yangji (beef brisket) pho at 11,000 won each — along with grilled bulgogi with cheese and grilled rice balls at 15,000 won, and the broth had no off smell while noodles, bean sprouts, cheongyang chili and pickled onion were free to refill. Either cut is a safe order, and the free refills make Wolmidang good value.
