Charcoal eel and sauce combos at Gangnam Station: Jangsimdo Gangnam

Jangsimdo Gangnam is a charcoal-grilled eel restaurant on basement level 2 of 363 Tower, right in front of Gangnam Station Exit 5 in Seocho, Seoul. On a Friday evening, the writer and a friend ordered the Seonsang charcoal-grilled 1++ grade eel with Mubyeongjangsu soup, bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) and Hongyeon sangria; staff grilled the eel all the way through, leaving the skin crisp and the flesh tender, and the writer called it the best eel they had ever eaten. Jangsimdo Gangnam is a strong choice for company dinners, formal family meetings before a wedding and family gatherings where you want to treat your guests.

Jonggak monastery-themed pub pairing stout with carrot cake: Sudowonui

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo (수도원의 비밀 저장고) is a medieval monastery-themed craft beer pub in a basement near Exit 4 of Jonggak Station in Jongno, Seoul. After a pork belly dinner, the writer and a friend came to Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo for a second round and ordered two glasses of the Seongjeonui Geueurim craft stout and the Golden Spiced Cake of the Monk, a carrot cake. Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo is a good pick when you want an unusual bar or a smooth dark beer.

Date-night Chinese pub at Dangsan Station: window sofa seat, Yongyong

Yongyong Seonsaeng Dangsan Station branch (용용선생 당산역점) is a Hong Kong retro-style Chinese pub on Yangpyeong-ro near Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a date booked through Naver Reservation, the writer sat at a window sofa seat and ordered volcano mala hot pot, butter kkanpunggi (crispy fried chicken in buttery chili-garlic sauce) and soy sauce egg fried rice with Saero soju, and even though the writer can't handle much spice, the mala hot pot was delicious. Verdict: Yongyong Seonsaeng Dangsan Station branch is a great date-night drinking spot for the volcano mala hot pot, butter kkanpunggi and egg fried rice combo.
