Hongdae bakery garlic baguette better than Mokpo's: Mandong Jegwa

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a bakery on Yeonhui-ro in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, about a 10-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station. On a first visit after lunch, the writer picked the bakery's most popular garlic baguette at 7,000 won and a cappuccino bread at 5,600 won, and tried about five tasting samples on the way in. The garlic baguette came crisp outside, soft inside and generous with condensed milk — better, the writer felt, than the garlic bread from Mokpo's famous bakery.

Hongdae hanok restaurant in Seoul for a sunlit courtyard lunch: Anok

Anok is a hanok-style Korean restaurant in Hongdae, Seoul, a 7-minute walk from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station. Lunch at Anok was clear gomtang (beef broth soup) at 13,000 won, Pyeongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) in broth at 14,000 won and pork tail jjim (braised pork tail) at 29,000 won, with a sunlit hanok courtyard and soft lighting keeping the room quiet in the middle of Hongdae. Anok's pork tail jjim was the best braised pork tail of any tried so far.
