Getting a meal together on a busy morning is no easy thing. And when I am packing food for a long trip, I cannot keep buying meals forever, so I stock up on fruit at least—but it is not easy to store, and it is hard to eat while driving, too. In the mornings, I barely manage with baked eggs and a blueberry smoothie, but even that often feels like a hassle.

So the product I tried this time was Garu Seonsaeng (Garuseonsaeng Drinkable Drinkable) Jeju Matcha Powdered Soy Milk. There were so many varieties, but since I usually love matcha, I chose the Jeju Matcha flavor. It is fresh soy milk in powder form, so there is less pressure about the shelf life—and above all, I was most curious about how easily I could drink it with just water.

Garu Seonsaeng Jeju Matcha Powdered Soy Milk comes in a zip-top pouch. Unlike carton soy milk, it does not need refrigeration, and it was convenient to take out whenever I needed it. You just zip it closed after one serving, so it does not take up much space either. Especially when traveling or going on a business trip, carrying several liquid soy milk cartons is surprisingly heavy and bulky; this powdered soy milk format seemed nicely portable.

The shelf life is 12 months from the manufacturing date. Since it can be stored for almost a year, I think even people who do not drink soy milk often could buy it without much pressure. It is an all-in-one meal powder that anyone aged one and up can have, so that is even more reassuring, right? An included scoop comes inside the package, too.

It was convenient because I could use it right away without measuring separately. The moment I opened the pouch, I could smell fresh matcha and soy milk; it was not an artificially intense scent, but something natural. The smell passes for now! I thought I would be able to tell about additives once I tasted it, too!

Powdered soy milk that mixes well in cold water

Garu Seonsaeng Jeju Matcha Fresh Soy Milk can be made with two included scoops per paper-cup-sized cup of water. When I scooped up the powder, oh? It did not fly around as much as I expected. You know how powder in a plastic pouch spills onto the table and scatters when you lift it with a spoon;; But this one seemed to have such fine particles that it stayed tidy from the moment I scooped it (?) haha.

It said it dissolves well even in cold water, so I quickly took water from the refrigerator and tried it. A few swirls with a spoon, and it mixed into the water better than I expected? A little sediment does settle at the bottom over time, though, so if you drink it slowly, it is best to give it a stir now and then!

The nutty flavor of Korean matcha and Korean soybeans

The most important thing is the taste, right? I reaaally, reaaally dislike sweet drinks. I do not even like store-bought matcha lattes or sweet soy milk cartons. I prefer clean flavors so much that I drink unsweetened matcha lattes or even blend my own soy milk.

Garu Seonsaeng Jeju Matcha Powdered Soy Milk was not as sweet as I expected. It had only a touch of sweetness to temper the slightly heavy notes of the matcha and soy milk.

Looking more closely, I saw that it uses Korean organic matcha and soybeans? There are so many Chinese soybeans out there... My trust level went up from here! Above all, the sweetness comes from unrefined raw sugar, so I could drink it with peace of mind haha.

When I actually drank it, the matcha's pleasant bitterness and the soy milk's nutty flavor came together into a taste that worked perfectly well as an easy meal powder. At first there was the fresh, astringent taste of matcha leaves; in the middle came the nutty soy milk; and at the end, a non-overwhelming sweetness seemed to linger. (Meal-powder sommelier;;;)

I think I understood what they meant about no additives. Above all, I could not detect that distinctly strong scent of artificial flavoring. The taste was very clean. It was almost like the unsweetened matcha latte I had at a matcha-field café in Jeju. If you usually like low-sugar soy milk, clean matcha lattes, or matcha milk, I think you can enjoy this without any burden.

Garu Seonsaeng Jeju Matcha Powdered Soy Milk was easy to make with just water, making it useful as a meal substitute on busy mornings or while traveling. Its powdered soy milk form mixed relatively well even in cold water, which made it convenient, and the combination of Korean matcha and Korean soybeans gave it a natural, nutty flavor.

It was not overly sweet, so it felt easy to drink; I also thought it would make a nice simple healthy snack or coffee alternative.
