Authentic Taiwanese restaurant in Jongno: yuxiang eggplant, Cheonghwa

Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon (청화 우육도삭면) is a Taiwanese restaurant at Jongno 19 in Jongno, Seoul, recommended by the writer's boss, who lived in Taiwan for 10 years and said it tastes the most like Taiwan of any Taiwanese food he has had in Korea. The writer has eaten at Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon once a month for 3 years. On this solo visit the writer ordered the yuxiang eggplant rice bowl (10,800 won) and shumai (9,800 won): crisp-outside, tender-inside fried eggplant and juicy shrimp-and-pork shumai. The 1st floor has freezing air conditioning and the 2nd floor has roomier seating, so pick your floor by how much you feel the heat.

Jongno 3-ga spicy dumpling hot pot with self-serve sides: Jongga Mandu

Jongga Mandu is a handmade dumpling hot pot restaurant in front of Tapgol Park in Jongno 3-ga, Seoul. A spicy mandu hot pot (eolkeun mandu jeongol) for two came with 4 dumplings per person (2 meat, 2 kimchi) plus kalguksu noodles, and the kimchi and danmuji (pickled radish) sides were self-serve, so you take as much as you like. On a weekday at 11:30 a.m., Jongga Mandu was packed, but tables turned over fast, so there was no wait. It is a quick, filling lunch spot near Jongno 3-ga Station.

Songjeong tea café with a QR beach train timetable: Suwolgyeonghwa

Suwolgyeonghwa is an ocean-view tea café on the 3rd and 4th floors facing Songjeong Beach in Haeundae, Busan. On a midsummer visit in the first week of August, the writer used the table QR code to check the beach train timetable and photograph the yellow antique train. The order was an iced Melongmance, an iced Louis Velvet Cloud (루이벨벳구름) and the Dalbodeure Box (달보드레상자) dessert set. The writer came to Suwolgyeonghwa for the view but left more impressed by the tea and desserts.

Magok date-night pasta restaurant with Meat Meat linguine: Pasta Go

Pasta Go Magok Branch is a budget pasta restaurant on the 2nd floor of Botanic Prugio City near Magongnaru Station in Gangseo, Seoul, where most plates run in the 10,000-won range. On a weekday evening visit, a couple ordered the solo set with Meat Meat Pasta for 18,025 won and the Shrimp Toowoomba Pasta for 11,920 won, both served on linguine rather than regular spaghetti and finished down to the last of the sauce. The Meat Meat Pasta broke the idea that meat pasta tastes heavy, and it is the dish to order again at Pasta Go Magok Branch.
