Daechi-dong eel restaurant date lunch, better than Japan: Manmok

Manmok (만목) is an eel rice bowl restaurant on Seolleung-ro 82-gil in Daechi-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, a 5–7 minute walk from Seolleung Station. On a couple's lunch date, the writer ordered Manmok's whole eel rice bowl with wasabi, pickled ginger and sancho pepper, and her boyfriend, who has eaten eel rice bowls in Japan, said Manmok's was far better. With an upscale wood-toned interior and tender eel with no fishy taste, Manmok is a strong pick for anyone looking for a special lunch.

Braised short rib jajangmyeon at Samsin, a Sinsa Chinese restaurant

Samsin Garosu-gil is a Chinese course restaurant on Garosu-gil near Sinsa Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Instead of a course, the writer ordered three à la carte dishes — braised short rib jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), East Coast seafood jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and shrimp hagau dumplings — and received xiaolongbao free; the ribs were generous enough to leave some behind and the hagau shrimp were springy. With Course A at 25,000 won per person, Samsin works whether you go for the course or à la carte.
