Gwangju eel restaurant, two for under ₩40,000 at 11am: Yuil Jangeo

Yuil Jangeo is a farm-direct, self-grill eel restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan, Gwangju. Arriving right at the 11am opening as the first customers, the writer and her mom chose a two-person eel from the display counter and grilled it over charcoal for under ₩40,000, with enough left over to fill a takeout container; the table charge is ₩4,000 per adult and ₩2,000 per elementary student. Yuil Jangeo is worth an early visit, since lunchtime fills nearly every seat.

Gwangju Chinese restaurant, QR order and 6-piece dumplings: Mayway

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant with house-made noodles in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, on Cheomdangangbyeon-ro near Lotte Mart, open since July 15. On a weekend evening there was no wait, and ordering by table QR brought the solo set meal (jjamppong spicy seafood noodle soup + jjajang noodles + tangsuyuk sweet-and-sour pork) for 12,900 won, brisket jjamppong for 13,900 won, solo seafood nurungjitang (scorched-rice soup) for 15,900 won and assorted dumplings, 6 pieces, for 5,000 won, plus free sweet potato fritters and ice cream. The flavors at Mayway are mild rather than punchy and the prices are easy, making it a place worth returning to for the stone-griddle jjajang.
