Geumdon Hwaro Sangil-dong Station Branch (금돈화로 상일동역점) is a charcoal BBQ restaurant for aged Korean pork near Sangildong Station in Gangdong, Seoul, where staff grill the meat from start to finish. On an early weekend evening with the kids, the writer had aged pork belly and aged pork neck, ordered extra pork neck and finished with mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles). With free steamed egg, refillable seasoned cabbage, kids' cutlery, seaweed and a Pororo drink, Geumdon Hwaro is a good fit for family dinners with children.

Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch (아빠찜 하남본점) is a Korean restaurant on Wolho-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi, specializing in braised pollock (kodari jjim) and braised monkfish (agu jjim). On a weekday visit before lunch, the order was cuttlefish braised pollock with extra siraegi (dried radish greens) and pollock roe, plus fragrant pot rice finished as nurungji (scorched rice). Menji Hanam Misa Branch is a Japanese ramen and tonkatsu restaurant on Misagangbyeonbuk-ro 30beon-angil in Hanam, Gyeonggi. On a hot day the meal was tori naengmyeon (chilled chicken-broth noodles), soy ramen with a soft-boiled egg and freshly fried karaage: the naengmyeon broth was as clean-tasting as Pyongyang naengmyeon, while the soy ramen was pleasantly salty.
