Jjambbong restaurant in Godeok, Pyeongtaek: lunch for two at Jangsu

Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom is a Chinese restaurant specialising in jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) on Godeokbuk-ro in Godeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. On a weekday lunch for two, the order was Gobul Jjambbong (12,000 won), a large shrimp fried rice (12,000 won) and a small sweet and sour pork (15,000 won), and the staff refilled the jjajang sauce generously. The fiery gochujang bulgogi jjambbong and the old-school sweet and sour pork are what stay with you at Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom.

Weekday two-course set for two in a 4-person room: Suksudaega

Suksudaega is a hanok-style Korean set-meal restaurant in Anjung, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. Visiting late in pregnancy with her partner, the writer ordered one weekday-only braised king short rib set and one Beopseongpo dried yellow croaker set at 39,000 won each, seated in the four-person room No. 5 for a course running from pumpkin porridge, beef tartare, and rice cake ribs to hot-pot rice, scorched rice tea, and plum tea. Coming as a couple still meant getting to try two different mains, which made the visit feel worthwhile.
