Nokdo Susan is a sashimi shop at stalls 57 and 58 inside Daecheon Port Fish Market in Boryeong, Chungnam, where you can have fresh fish cut and packed to go. On an early summer trip in mid-June, three people took away ₩50,000 of flounder and ₩20,000 of seasonal cuttlefish sashimi and ate it at their resort until 3 a.m. Thanks to an ice box lined with ice cubes, the sashimi was still cold 3–4 hours later. Nokdo Susan is a solid pick for Daecheon travelers who want fresh seasonal sashimi to go in generous portions at a low price.

Beef BBQ date in Gojan-dong, Ansan: yukhoe in cold noodles, Yangsimso

Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch is a new Korean BBQ restaurant in Gojan-dong, Ansan, right in front of Ansan City Hall, specializing in aged galbisal (boneless beef rib meat) and LA galbi. Two friends ordered 3 servings of 48-hour aged galbisal at 19,000 won each plus mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) at 8,000 won, received free chadol doenjang stew (soybean paste stew with beef brisket) and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), and ate the yukhoe in the naengmyeon like mul-yukhoe. Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch delivered on taste, price, extras and cleanliness, making it a solid date-night BBQ spot in Ansan.

Seolleung Station squid restaurant with extra-spicy takeout: Haetan

Haetan Seolleung Branch (해탄 선릉점) is a Korean squid restaurant on the 2nd floor near Exit 2 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. At a long-awaited Seoul get-together, the writer ordered the Haetan Hansang set for 65,000 won, which includes stone-plate stir-fried squid for 2, boiled pork belly (kkotsamgyeop suyuk) with tangy squid salad, and fried squid. The writer found the regular spice level easy to get used to and liked the stone-plate squid enough to take home 2 extra-spicy portions.

Katsu restaurant in Garosu-gil for a rainy-day date: Ikki Roll Katsu

On a rainy-day date lunch, the writer ordered sweet potato cheese katsu and rosé katsu (15,500 won each) plus butter garlic fries (6,500 won), with unlimited rice, soup and broccoli soup from the self bar and generous portions. Ikki Roll Katsu Garosu-gil Main Branch is a good-value, cozy pick for a date lunch in Garosu-gil.

Mangwon Mexican spot at night: chimichanga split three ways, Taco Dot

Taco Dot Mangwon Market Main Branch is a Mexican restaurant on Mangridan-gil near Mangwon Market in Mapo, Seoul. The writer ordered the grilled meat fajita platter and a chimichanga; tortillas, sauces and cilantro come with free refills, and the chimichanga was big enough for three people with cheese that kept stretching. At night Taco Dot feels especially exotic, and the location, food, atmosphere and service all held up.
