Chilgok charcoal hanwoo BBQ even picky kids eat: Deulkkot Hanu

Deulkkot Hanu (들꽃한우) is a charcoal-grill hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant tucked inside a residential area at the foot of Palgongsan in Dongmyeong-myeon, Chilgok, Gyeongbuk. After exploring the large garden and landscaped waterfall with their child, the writer's family grilled 1++ hanwoo kkot-galbisal (prime rib cap) and galbi-sal (rib finger meat) over charcoal, and the beef was so tender that their child, who refuses meat that is even slightly tough, never put down the chopsticks. Deulkkot Hanu pairs Palgongsan scenery with tender 1++ hanwoo, and the owner's guesthouse lets a group gathering carry on after dinner.

Aewol pork noodle shop on a cloudy day: rich broth, cold pork, Handam

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch (한담국수 곽지애월점) is a pork noodle restaurant near Handam Beach in Aewol, Jeju, known for bone broth gogi-guksu (pork noodle soup). The writer walked in with a child at 10:40 a.m. without a wait and ordered two large bowls of rich bone broth noodles (1,000 won extra for large) and dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced boiled pork). The cloudy sky blurred the ocean view, but the broth was rich without being greasy. With one hour of free parking at Aewol Handam Parking Lot and baby chairs, Handam Guksu is a solid Aewol lunch with kids.

Gumi Korean restaurant revisit: hanwoo minari boiled beef, Hanjaechon

Hanjaechon Gumi Main Branch (한재촌 구미본점) is a Korean restaurant in Indong, Gumi, Gyeongbuk, known for hanwoo (Korean beef) and minari (water dropwort). On a family revisit, we reordered the Hanjaechon beef stew we loved last time and added hanwoo minari suyuk (boiled beef with minari) and steamed rice. Alternating the rich, spicy beef stew with the mild minari suyuk worked well, and the second visit to Hanjaechon Gumi Main Branch was just as satisfying.

Suwolgyeonghwa (수월경화) is an ocean-view tea café on the 3rd and 4th floors of a red brick building right in front of Songjeong Beach in Haeundae, Busan. On a visit with a child, the order was the Dalbodre box, Lemon Sunset, Miguksik Gabae (American-style coffee) and, for the child who can't drink coffee, chestnut sikhye (sweet rice drink), along with a look at the calm 3rd floor versus the 4th-floor window seats overlooking the beach train. Suwolgyeonghwa is a Korean-style café worth stopping at least once on a Songjeong outing with kids.

Korean BBQ in Haeundae, Busan for a family of three: Seokok Galbi

Seokok Galbi (석옥갈비) is a pork galbi (marinated pork rib) restaurant on Jwadong-sunhwan-ro in Haeundae, Busan. On a Busan trip, a family of three ordered 4 servings of jangin galbi, bowls of rice and the 3,000 won minsaeng kimchi stew. The finely scored raw pork ribs were tender enough for the child, and the self-serve bar sauces and baekjinju rice also satisfied. For families looking for a kid-friendly pork galbi spot in Haeundae, Seokok Galbi is worth a look.

Gumi loach soup restaurant with an extra half-plate of pork: Irojeong

Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch is a sanghwang loach soup and boiled pork set-meal restaurant on Bakjeonghui-ro in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Arriving with a child at noon on a Saturday during the dog days of summer, the writer waited behind 22 groups, then ordered the boiled pork sanghwang loach set and the whole pork loin cutlet, adding a half plate of boiled pork because the first serving ran out too fast. A rest area and a playroom made the wait easy with a child, and Irojeong is a place worth returning to with parents.
