Jeju rice cake shop by limousine bus: 6 omegi-tteok flavors, Suragan

Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방) is an omegi-tteok (Jeju rice cake) shop on Noyeon-ro in Jeju City, about a 10-minute drive from Jeju Airport. On the last day of a car-free trip, the writer took the limousine bus from Seogwipo, packed 20 omegi-tteok in 6 flavors at ₩1,000 each, and froze them at home. The chewy rice cake and creamy red bean filling beat expectations, making Suragan Tteokbang a good-value Jeju souvenir stop for travelers on public transport.

Magok taco restaurant: fish tacos like fish and chips, Taqueros

Taqueros Magok Main Branch is a Mexican restaurant specialising in tacos and BBQ pork ribs, on the 2nd floor of Magok GMG Tower near Magok Station Exit 3 in Gangseo, Seoul. Near the end of the weekday lunch rush, the Signature Couple Set (59,000 won) brought lime beer, complimentary nachos, a fish taco and a chicken taco, and Texas BBQ ribs, and the Taqueros fish taco tasted like British fish and chips in taco form. Taqueros Magok Main Branch is not cheap, but for the portions and quality it is a fairly priced taco spot in Magok.

Budget dumpling hot pot near Jongno 3-ga past lunch peak: Jongga Mandu

Jongga Mandu (종가만두) is a handmade dumpling hot pot restaurant on Supyo-ro, between Jongno 3-ga and Jonggak stations in Jongno, Seoul. Jongga Mandu was nearly full even after the lunch peak; the half-and-half broth mandu hot pot for two came with clear and spicy hwangtae (dried pollack) broth, plus 4 kimchi and 4 meat dumplings per person. With most meals at ₩13,000-14,000 per person, Jongga Mandu is good value for central Seoul today.

Mullae seafood shabu-shabu restaurant for an early dinner: Palmi

Palmi Jogae Kalguksu (팔미 조개칼국수) is a newly opened clam shabu kalguksu and seafood restaurant in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, about 500m from Mullae Station Exit 1. At an early dinner, the Palmi clam shabu kalguksu (18,900 won at dinner) in the basic broth came with clams, abalone, mussels, meat, vegetables and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), followed by the abalone porridge the owner insisted on. Palmi Jogae Kalguksu is worth a stop for a filling seafood shabu-shabu meal or a group gathering near Mullae Station.

Shabu in Seoul Hapjeong Branch is a premium shabu-shabu restaurant on basement level 2 of Delight Square 1, by Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving with her sister right at the 11:00 opening as the first customers of the day, the writer ordered spicy mushroom broth with prime Angus chuck eye and 1++ hanwoo bottom sirloin, then closed the meal with rose risotto. Both the meat quality and the calm, beige-toned private seating at Shabu in Seoul Hapjeong Branch lived up to the price.

Yeonnam-dong date-night BBQ where staff grill the short rib: Hwaseol

Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Seongmisan-ro in Mapo, Seoul, serving hanwoo beef and Korean pork in one place. The order was two servings of raw beef short rib, two servings of snowflake pork neck and a hanwoo doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and a staff member grilled every cut to the right point at the table. With roomy table spacing and free corkage, Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom works just as well for a Yeonnam-dong date as for a group dinner near Hongdae.
