Hongdae gomtang restaurant down a lantern-lit stone alley: Anok

Anok is a hanok gomtang (clear beef bone soup) restaurant on Hongik-ro in Mapo, Seoul, set between Hongik University Station and Hongdae street and reached through a stone-walled alley hung with lanterns. Over lunch with her boyfriend, the writer ordered clear gomtang for ₩13,000, Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in water broth) for ₩14,000 and braised pork tail for ₩29,000, and followed the owner's tip to dip the meat in sauce. Anok made for a hearty, satisfying lunch in the middle of Hongdae.

Open-kitchen counter at a Yeongdeungpo izakaya: spicy nabe, Nani

Nani Byeolgwan Yeongdeungpo Branch is a Japanese-style izakaya across the crosswalk from Exit 3 of Times Square in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. After an afternoon of shopping with a friend who had taken a half day off, the writer ordered the spicy Nagasaki seafood nabe at 28,000 won with udon noodles added, chicken skewers at 15,000 won and pork belly scallion skewers at 15,000 won. With its sharp, spicy broth, smoky grilled skewers and soft lighting, Nani Byeolgwan suits both a night out with friends and a date.
