Naengmyeon like cold galbitang near Pyeongtaek Station: Seoul Myeonok

Seoul Myeonok (서울면옥) is a long-established naengmyeon (cold noodle) restaurant a 2-minute walk from Exit 1 of Pyeongtaek Station in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. The writer had hesitated to try Pyongyang naengmyeon because of its love-it-or-hate-it reputation. At Seoul Myeonok, the writer and a friend ordered Pyongyang naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon and a half plate of pork belly suyuk (boiled pork), and the writer, who always left naengmyeon unfinished, drank the whole bowl down to the last drop of broth for the first time. Verdict: Seoul Myeonok is a great place to try Pyongyang naengmyeon for the first time.

Bucheon City Hall pub: chewy gil-gamja & roe rice ball, Suljogeombam

Suljogeombam (술속의밤) Bucheon City Hall branch is a Korean pub on the 2nd floor of a building near Exit 3 of City Hall Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, with a spacious, leafy green forest-themed interior, group tables and private rooms. The writer ordered the signature cheese whole squid pork belly (switched to corn cheese), gil-gamja (a chewy potato snack said to be trending in Gangneung), draft beer and a flying fish roe rice ball, and especially liked the chewy gil-gamja and the spicy pork belly and squid sauce. Suljogeombam Bucheon City Hall branch works best as a first stop for food and drinks together rather than a second round.

Gwangju lamb skewer spot for group dinners and mala tang: Jangbaeksan

Jangbaeksan Yangkkochi Songjeong (장백산양꼬치 송정본점) is a lamb skewer and Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju, about a 5-minute walk from Songjeong Station Exit 1, with group seating and private rooms that suit work dinners and get-togethers. The writer ordered 2 servings of lamb skewers and mala tang; the rich mala tang broth won over a diner who usually prefers mung bean sprouts and dislikes soybean sprouts in mala tang, and a free starchy, Chinese-style egg soup came on the side. Close to the station, with parking and plenty of seats, Jangbaeksan Yangkkochi Songjeong is an easy pick whenever you crave lamb.

Jije Station stew restaurant: roe-packed minari broth at Sokcho Halmae

Sokcho Halmae Dongtae-tang Pyeongtaek Jije-dongsak Branch (속초할매동태탕 평택지제동삭점) is a Korean restaurant specialising in pollack stew (dongtae-tang) in Dongsak-dong, near Jije Station in Pyeongtaek. At Sokcho Halmae, the 2-person Sokcho set was ordered as pollack and roe stew, with plain rice upgraded to pot rice for 1,000 won, plus the set's half a mackerel and mini fried fish balls; the broth, packed with minari (Korean water parsley), was clean and refreshing, and the gonni (pollack milt) and roe were generous. The 2-person set felt like enough for three, making Sokcho Halmae a hearty lunch pick near Jije Station.
