Early no-wait sushi in Gwanghwamun, futomaki and B set: Elephant Sushi

Elephant Sushi Gwanghwamun (코끼리초밥 광화문점) is a sushi restaurant on basement level 1, directly connected to Gwanghwamun Station in Jongno, Seoul. On an early visit there was no wait, and the Elephant Sushi B set came with soy-marinated shrimp sushi instead of regular shrimp, plus a mini soba, alongside a 5-piece futomaki. With fresh toppings and a generous spread, Elephant Sushi Gwanghwamun is worth a return visit whenever you're in Gwanghwamun.

Gwangmyeong jjukkumi restaurant booked on CatchTable: Jeongipum

Jeongipum Jjukkumi Gwangmyeong 1st Branch is a Korean restaurant near Gwangmyeong Station in Gyeonggi that serves griddle-cooked jjukkumi (spicy stir-fried webfoot octopus) with minari (Korean water parsley) delivered straight from the farm. Booking on CatchTable and pre-ordering meant no wait for the Sari-deumbuk Jjukkumi-woosamgyeop (octopus with thin-sliced beef brisket and extra noodles) at medium spice, finished with cheese fried rice. The minari, jjukkumi and brisket combination was the best bite, and with a spacious parking lot Jeongipum Jjukkumi Gwangmyeong 1st Branch is a solid pick for family meals and group dinners.

Sinjung-dong Korean BBQ: no-wait lunch, wasabi salt, Cham Dwaejitgan

Cham Dwaejitgan Bucheon Sinjung-dong Branch is a 24-hour Korean BBQ restaurant on the Sinjung-dong Station food street in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. On a lunchtime visit with a friend, we were seated with no wait, ordered samgyeopsal (pork belly) and moksal (pork neck) on the table tablet, and staff grilled the meat for us to eat with wasabi salt and lettuce wraps. With a clean self-serve side dish bar, Cham Dwaejitgan also works well for a work dinner or a get-together with friends.

Bucheon Korean restaurant, front parking and eggplant fritters: Gim

Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Bucheon Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on Gilju-ro 560beon-gil in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the Tteuranchae Bapsang set for two plus grilled mackerel, with cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), stone-pot rice and namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes. The writer then took more yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) and eggplant fritters from the self-serve banchan corner. With parking right in front and mild, non-spicy Korean food, Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang is a good place to take your parents.

Cone affogato with a separate shot at Gangneung café Coffee Dripper

Coffee Dripper is a wood-tone roastery café on Nanseolheon-ro in Gangneung, known for its coffee ice cream and desserts. The cone affogato arrives with the espresso shot on the side rather than poured over the ice cream, so you can mix it to taste, and the choco croffin comes topped with dark chocolate alongside a tangy iced americano. With parking right in front and outdoor seats, Coffee Dripper is an easy stop on a Gangneung road trip.

Mullae hot pot restaurant with live abalone from the tank: Palmi

Palmi Jogae Kalguksu is a clam shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Dorim-ro 147-gil near Mullae Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a date in Mullae, I ordered the Palmi clam shabu kalguksu with the basic broth and worked through live abalone and clams from the tank by the entrance, two kinds of meat, then kalguksu noodles and abalone porridge to finish. The ingredients at Palmi Jogae Kalguksu were fresh and the portions generous, so it suits dates, family meals and work dinners alike.
