Dongdaemun restaurant for bindaetteok and makgeolli pairing: Sunhuine

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is a Korean restaurant in Dongdaemun Market, Jongno, Seoul, famous among foreign tourists. On a return visit, the writer ordered the exact combination spotted at a neighbouring table last time: yukhoe tangtangi (raw beef with chopped live octopus), pork and seafood bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) and makgeolli (rice wine), comparing Sunhuine makgeolli with Jipyeong makgeolli over 2 bottles. For crispy pork mung bean pancake and fresh yukhoe tangtangi with makgeolli, Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dongdaemun is a perfect fit.

COEX Korean restaurant: milt and roe pollack stew, Yangeunine

Yangeunine Samseong Station Branch (양은이네 삼성역점) is a Korean restaurant in Samseong-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, serving pollack stew (dongtae-tang) and bossam (boiled pork wraps), just across the street from the COEX west gate. After a long, tiring day at a COEX event, the writer ordered the original-flavor pollack stew for 2 (₩24,000), which came packed with milt and roe, plus a pyeonyuk (pressed boiled pork) plate from a Naver event and a ramen noodle add-on. In pricey COEX, Yangeunine Samseong Station Branch is a good-value Korean restaurant with no weak spot in price, side dishes or friendly service.

Cheongju Korean restaurant, business-trip dinner set: Jeju Badang

Jeju Badang (제주바당) is a Korean restaurant in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju, specialising in Jeju-style grilled and braised fish. On the last evening of a business trip, the writer was first through the door at dinner opening and ordered the set for two: boneless braised hairtail, a giant grilled black tilefish, two pot rice bowls (sotbap) and salad bar access, plus a refill of seaweed soup. The oversized black tilefish and the freshly fried chicken at the Jeju Badang salad bar made this a standout meal.
