Picking a place to eat in Konkuk Univ. comes with a surprisingly tricky requirement.

Not too light, but not too grand either. If that's the kind of meal you're after, Hekbap Konkuk University Main Branch (핵밥 건대본점) turned out to be a pretty practical choice.

Looking for a proper meal instead of a bar in Konkuk Univ.?
Search for restaurants in Konkuk Univ. and bars and meat restaurants come up first, so picking an actual meal is awkward. That day, a meal that ended properly with rice appealed to me more than spicy drinking snacks.

So I chose Hekbap Konkuk University Main Branch. Hekbap is a brand built around rice bowls and ramen in a Japanese home-style (Gajeong) mood. The official menu page lists rice bowl, ramen, udon, soba, curry and katsu categories. With a spread like that, it's easy to agree on an order even when your companions have different tastes.

What's the atmosphere at Hekbap Konkuk University Main Branch?
It's close to Konkuk Univ. Station, so it's easy to drop in before or after meeting someone. The Konkuk area has that busy, chaotic feel, but the meal itself felt neat and tidy.

Eating alone didn't feel awkward, and coming as a pair and sharing dishes is easy too. If you want a clean, filling meal rather than an over-decorated Konkuk Univ. hotspot, this suits you.

What matters here is the practical comfort of a place with fast turnover. It's more a spot to eat well and move on than to sit and chat for hours. Doesn't Konkuk need more places like this than you'd think?

How does the Hanwoo daechang bowl set taste?
The one I was most excited about was the Hanwoo daechang bowl set (한우대창덮밥정식, Korean beef intestine on rice). Daechang is prized for its fatty richness, so the sauce balance matters. Too sweet and you tire of it fast; too salty and it drowns the rice. Hekbap's daechang bowl was tuned toward savory depth that goes well with rice.

The chewy texture and rich fat of the daechang came through, so the first bite was very satisfying. Having it as a set made the meal feel denser than a bowl alone.
How to eat the daechang bowl with less greasiness
When rich dishes feel heavy, I found it better to scoop rice and daechang separately and adjust the seasoning as you go, rather than mixing slowly bite by bite. That way the greasiness doesn't build up all the way to the end.

Pork jowl bowl set vs Hanwoo daechang bowl set: what's the difference?
The pork jowl bowl set (항정살덮밥정식) is a little milder than the daechang bowl. Jowl gets more savory the longer you chew, so the harmony of smoky grill flavor and sauce is the heart of it. If the daechang bowl is the rich one, the jowl bowl felt like a steadier everyday meal.

For lunch, the jowl bowl set felt a bit easier to me, while for a hearty dinner the Hanwoo daechang set would probably stick in memory more. Both are meat rice bowls, but the character is clearly different. So if you visit as a pair, I'd recommend ordering one of each, daechang and jowl, and sharing.
Tips before visiting Hekbap Konkuk University Main Branch
If you're looking for a restaurant in Konkuk Univ., Hekbap suits solo meals, a meal before a date, or a casual group meal. That said, daechang is strongly rich by nature, so if you're sensitive to greasy food, the pork jowl bowl set is the safer pick.

On the other hand, if you love deep meaty flavor and a sweet-salty sauce, the Hanwoo daechang bowl set may satisfy you more. After trying both, my impression is that Hekbap is a place where choosing well makes failure unlikely. It's somewhere I'd remember when I need a proper meal in Konkuk Univ. instead of a bar.
