Magok kaisendon restaurant, celebrity autograph wall: Ilpum Magok

In short

Ilpum Magok (일품 마곡점) is a kaisendon (raw seafood rice bowl) restaurant on the ground floor of Leaders Tower Magok in Gangseo, Seoul. After a weekend wait, the kaisendon was ordered by QR code at Ilpum Magok. Chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), miso soup, udon and white kimchi arrived first, followed by a kaisendon generously topped with salmon and tuna that was eaten wrapped in seaweed, and the meal ended with a mango purée panna cotta. Ilpum Magok is a satisfying Japanese restaurant for a Magok date, with fresh seafood, neat set sides and a dessert to match.

Today I'm sharing my visit to Ilpum Magok (일품 마곡점), a Magok kaisendon (raw seafood rice bowl) spot where you can enjoy fresh seafood.

I love seafood, so I'm always hunting down good kaisendon places. This one is said to have been visited by TV personality Lee Young-ja, so my expectations were even higher.

If you're looking for a date spot or a special meal in Magok, this might be worth a look.

Ilpum Magok location, parking and waiting

Ilpum Magok is on the ground floor of Leaders Tower Magok. It's about a 4-minute walk from Balsan Station Exit 8 and about 8 minutes from Magok Station Exit 8, so it's easy to reach by public transport.

There's underground parking in the building, so you can drive too. I went on a weekend and it was busy enough that there was a wait. Since it's already well known in Magok, I'd recommend reserving before you go.

Ilpum Magok atmosphere and seating

The inside was clean and upscale. With counter seats and tables, it seemed suitable for everything from solo meals to dates and family dinners.

One wall was covered in autographs from famous celebrities, and I thought, okay, there's a reason so many people come here.

Ilpum Magok menu and set sides

Ilpum Magok serves a range of Japanese dishes, including kaisendon, sushi and unagidon (eel rice bowl). Every main comes with chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), a noodle dish, tempura and dessert, so the set is quite generous.

This time I ordered the kaisendon. Ordering is done by QR code, which was convenient, and I liked being able to look through the menu at my own pace.

After ordering, the chawanmushi, soup, udon and white kimchi came out first. They were a nice light start before the main dish, and neatly done.

How was the kaisendon at Ilpum Magok?

The kaisendon here is a bowl piled high with several kinds of raw fish, including salmon and tuna, and I gasped at the look of it. The colors were so vivid that I couldn't not take photos.

Generous amounts of fresh salmon and tuna made it satisfying just to look at. Above all, you could really taste the freshness. Piece by piece, the soft texture and rich, nutty flavor filled my mouth.

The rice was impressive too. It was seasoned just right, so it went well with the fish, adding depth without overpowering the natural taste of the ingredients.

Try wrapping the kaisendon in seaweed

When I wrapped the fish and rice in the seaweed that came with it, the flavor came alive even more. Personally, the seaweed wrap is the combination I'd recommend most.

Dessert: mango purée panna cotta

Near the end of the meal, panna cotta came out as dessert. The sweetness of the mango purée on top blended nicely with the smooth texture, making it a perfect palate cleanser.

Overall verdict on Ilpum Magok

Ilpum Magok is a Magok kaisendon spot where you can properly enjoy fresh seafood. The flavor and the plating were both excellent, it made me feel well looked after, and I was happy with the set sides and dessert too.

If you're after a date-worthy place or a Japanese restaurant with a good atmosphere in Magok, it's worth a visit. For a pleasant meal built around one bowl of fresh kaisendon, I recommend Ilpum Magok.
