Gunja café in Seoul with decaf Americano and orange dessert: Palco

In short

Palco (팔코) is a dessert café on Neungdong-ro in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, near Gunja Station and Achasan. Drawn in by the exterior, the writer ordered two Americanos (one decaf) and an Orange Mamalade dessert, and found the coffee well balanced, the dessert fresh and sweet, and the service relaxed. For anyone looking for a quiet Gunja café to talk or unwind, Palco is worth a return visit.

Today I was just looking for a café with a nice atmosphere and wandered in. It wasn't planned, but I was walking by and the exterior was so pretty and stylish that I simply went in: Palco. Conclusion first: Palco is a place I think I'll remember for quite a while.

I've been to a lot of cafés around Gunja, but Palco immediately felt like a place that did "atmosphere" well. It isn't overdecorated; it's naturally pretty, which is probably why I liked it even more.

What is the atmosphere like at Palco, the Gunja café?

Palco is a café with a hip yet calm mood, soft lighting and clean interiors. The moment you open the door, you can tell the vibe is different.

The signboard and the overall mood are understated but stylish, which made the place look all the more refined.

You usually end up sitting for a long time in places like this, and Palco is really laid out for conversation, so the thought "this would be great for a date too" came right away.

How are the coffee and dessert at Palco?

At Palco I ordered two Americanos, and one of them was decaf. Both the coffee and the dessert were better than I expected.

Just having decaf on the menu felt considerate, and the coffee itself was easy to drink. Not too acidic, not too bitter, a nicely balanced middle. And a clean taste. (Meaning: it's very good.)

Orange Mamalade dessert

On top of that, the Orange Mamalade dessert I ordered with it was quite impressive, more than I expected.

A fresh citrus scent rises subtly, yet it's sweet at the same time, a refined flavor, and it paired well with the coffee.

The "oh, they really do desserts well here" kind of feeling.

How were the owners at Palco?

The owners at Palco gave off a really comfortable feeling, which I liked. That kind of human atmosphere was one of the highlights.

It wasn't overly friendly; the service was natural and easygoing, which I think made it even better.

Some cafés are friendly to the point of being a bit much, but Palco has none of that; you can just stay comfortably. (They're very kind, but you can feel it's sincere.)

Who is Palco in Gunja a good fit for?

Palco is less a place just to drink coffee and more a space to sit quietly, talk, and spend time. (The coffee goes without saying.) It isn't easy to find a café like this in Gunja.

It isn't flashy, but the details come alive, which made it all the more memorable.

Would I go back?

Absolutely. Next time I want to come with more time to spare and sit for ages in this café!

Overall, Palco is a café with more "comfort you keep thinking about" than "eye-catching glamour." It isn't a place with special events, but that's exactly why it feels like somewhere you'd naturally end up in everyday life, a place that stays on your mind.

It's the kind of spot that comes to mind in Gunja when you want to sit quietly and talk or take a short break, and if you like this style of café, you'll be satisfied. Next time I'd like to sit more leisurely and enjoy a stronger cup of coffee.
