Gangneung café: autumn-leaf box, coffee vs corn sand—Gangneung Sand
In short
Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a sandwich cookie souvenir shop and café on Seonggokgoyang-gil in Gangneung, Gangwon, selling Gangneung Sand cookies in 6 flavors: coffee, dried persimmon, Chodang corn (sweet corn), black sesame, strawberry and sweet potato. The writer tasted the coffee and Chodang corn flavors side by side from an autumn foliage gift box, then explored the indoor sandbox on the 3rd floor and the 5th-floor observatory. Chodang corn charmed with its kernel texture and coffee with its rich flavor, but if only one could be chosen, the coffee Gangneung Sand was the top pick.

There's always something you end up bringing home from a Gangneung trip: a souvenir! This time I visited Gangneung Sand Main Branch (강릉샌드 본점), where you can enjoy Gangneung's signature foods, coffee and Chodang corn, as sand cookies. I already like sand cookies, so I was curious how they'd taste, and the two flavors turned out to be quite different in charm. I'll compare them as I go!

A quick preview of Gangneung Sand Main Branch

Is Gangneung Sand Main Branch a souvenir shop or a café?
Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a big building with white walls and blue window frames, and it holds a souvenir shop, a café and an activity space together. I thought it was just a gift shop, but wow, the building is pretty big!

I was surprised by the scale when I first arrived. I'd come expecting an ordinary souvenir shop, and it turned out to have a café and an activity space too.

Inside, blue tables and chairs and big plants made the place feel bright and fresh.
What award did Gangneung Sand win?
Gangneung Sand reportedly won the gold prize at the 2022 Gangneung City Tourism Souvenir Contest. It's not just a cookie; it's a dessert that carries Gangneung's local character.

I also read that Gangneung Bangpajebbang (a breakwater-themed bread) won silver in 2025, Neoegero Gotgam (persimmon dessert) won bronze in 2021, and Gangneung Coffee Tart won bronze in 2020, so it's impressive that they keep developing local desserts.
How many Gangneung Sand flavors are there?
Gangneung Sand comes in six flavors: coffee, dried persimmon, Chodang corn, black sesame, strawberry and sweet potato. You can pick whichever suits your taste.

The lineup uses foods Gangneung is known for, so it makes a meaningful travel gift. Of all of them, I chose the two I was most curious about: coffee and Chodang corn.

Isn't this autumn-vibe package pretty? It has fallen-leaf and maple illustrations, so it looked quite nice as a gift too.
Gangneung Sand packaging and how to spot the original
When you open the Gangneung Sand box, square sand cookies sit neatly, each one individually wrapped. They're easy to share, and handy for handing out to people after a trip.

Here's the part to watch! The original Gangneung Sand has the words "강릉샌드" (Gangneung Sand) clearly engraved on the cookie surface.

The shop itself highlights this as the feature that tells it apart from imitations. The letters really are crisply stamped, so it's nice for photos too.
What does Gangneung Sand Chodang corn taste like?
The Chodang corn (a sweet Gangneung-area corn variety) flavor is known for corn kernels popping in your bite through soft cream. Oh, fun to chew! Gangneung is famous for Chodang corn, right? So I tried it first, and it was the flavor I was more excited about.

I thought it would be only cream, but there are real kernels inside, so the texture was quite fun. It reportedly contains 23.5% gourmet butter, and maybe that's why the cookie was soft with a buttery flavor. If you like Chodang corn's signature sweetness and a bit of chew, I think you'll like this.
Coffee vs Chodang corn: if you could only pick one?
My one-and-only pick is the Gangneung Sand coffee flavor! If the corn flavor stayed in my memory for its texture, the coffee flavor suited me more for its flavor depth.

One bite and you smell coffee, and the soft cream and cookie go together well. Gangneung is a city famous for coffee, so a coffee sand cookie fits nicely. I enjoyed both, but if I had to choose one again, it's coffee! The corn flavor charms with its unusual texture, while the coffee was a bit more familiar yet kept me reaching for more.
Gangneung Sand Main Branch floors and the 3F sand box
The floor guide at Gangneung Sand Main Branch lists the counter and café on 2F, the sand box experience zone and café on 3F, a roasting room on 4F, and the observatory entrance on 5F. It felt like a place where just buying cookies and leaving would be a bit of a waste.

Going up to 3F, I was amazed to find a space filled with sand indoors.

There's a little lighthouse decoration in the middle and blue tables around it, so it felt like the seaside had been moved indoors.

On one side, excavator models are on display, and you can actually use a remote control to dig capsules out of the sand. Up on 5F there's an observatory, and I could see Gyeongpo Pavilion (Gyeongpodae) at a glance.
A sweet souvenir that stayed with me from Gangneung
Gangneung Sand was a dessert with six flavors that carry Gangneung's character, plus packaging that's great for gifting. Above all, I remember the soft cookie made with gourmet butter and how the cream differs by flavor. My taste was the coffee flavor, but the Chodang corn one was also plenty appealing thanks to its chewy kernels. If you're wondering what to bring home from Gangneung or what to gift someone, comparing these two flavors together could be fun.
