Jongno 3-ga bakery at 2:40pm, trays nearly bare: Munhwa Bakery

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno, Seoul, near Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. Arriving with her husband at 2:40pm on a weekday, the writer found most trays already emptied, but the signature garlic bread and onion bagel were still there and were sliced and packed to go. The garlic bread was crisp outside and soft inside with plenty of sauce, and the onion bagel held enough light, mild cream to stand in for a meal — go in the morning if you want the full lineup.

These days, if I had to pick somewhere to stroll on a quiet weekend or weekday afternoon and soak in a nostalgic vibe, I'd say Jongno and Ikseon-dong are it.

Last weekday afternoon, my husband and I went on a date around Jongno 3-ga. Wandering the alleys, we decided to check out Munhwa Bakery, a bakery-hopping spot I'd bookmarked ahead of time.

How to find Munhwa Bakery from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7

Munhwa Bakery sits at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, just a short walk from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7 toward Changdeokgung Palace. Its old-fashioned, pretty exterior catches your eye right away.

It was easy to find. Coming out of Exit 7 and walking a little way up toward Changdeokgung, a small, pretty storefront that fits right into the distinctive Jongno alley atmosphere comes into view.

The old neighborhood feel is still fully intact, so it's a really atmospheric spot for taking photos with the storefront as a backdrop.

There was a sign asking customers to enter in groups of two since the inside is quite small. Luckily, when I went, no one else was inside buying bread, so I walked right in with no wait.

What is still left at Munhwa Bakery at 2:40pm?

We got there around 2:40pm, and true to its popularity, a lot of the bread had already sold, leaving the trays fairly empty. Any later and I might not have gotten anything!

Munhwa Bakery is known among bread enthusiasts as a 'life-changing bakery,' so I walked in with high expectations. But since the bread sells fast, visiting in the afternoon meant there wasn't much left to choose from. I felt a small pang of disappointment for a moment.

Thankfully though, the two most famous signature items — the garlic bread and the onion bagel — were still there, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Takeout only: bread sliced and bagged in seconds

Munhwa Bakery operates as a takeout-only shop, so the inside is fairly compact. For a smoother flow, only two groups are let in at a time to pick out bread.

Once we picked what we wanted, a staff member wrapped it up with practiced hands. She quickly and skillfully sliced the thick, moist garlic bread into easy-to-eat pieces with scissors.

The onion bagel was cut just as swiftly, then briskly wrapped in plastic and tucked into a charming paper bag.

There was almost no waiting at all, and we were able to leave the shop in a good mood.

I heard this place isn't just about making delicious bread — it only sells bread made that same day, and donates any leftovers to children who don't get enough meals, elderly people living alone, and others in need. Learning about the brand's warm philosophy on top of the great taste made leaving with our bread feel even better.

As soon as we got home, I excitedly unwrapped the bread we'd brought back. The moment I opened the plastic, a savory, sweet aroma filled the air and really got the appetite going.

Garlic bread: fluffy rather than baguette-firm

Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread was completely different from the hard, crunchy baguette texture that usually comes to mind with 'garlic bread.' The outside was slightly crisp, while the inside was truly soft and pillowy.

Best of all, the garlic sauce had soaked all the way through — front, back, and every layer in between — so every bite was filled with moisture from edge to edge.

Sometimes garlic bread has such a strong garlic smell that only the sharp bite comes through, but Munhwa Bakery's version kept the garlic flavor alive while balancing it with a sweet, savory sauce, making it a crowd-pleaser that anyone, of any age, could enjoy without complaint.

Onion bagel: plenty of cream, but light on the palate

With black sesame seeds dotting the surface, the onion bagel looked appetizing right away, and the texture wasn't tough or dense at all — pleasantly chewy yet soft, with a satisfying bite. There was a generous amount of cream inside, so at first I worried it might be a bit heavy,

but once I actually tasted it, the cream was surprisingly light rather than heavy. The onion mixed into the cream wasn't sharp or pungent like raw onion either — instead its mild sweetness and gentle bite paired nicely with the richness of the cream cheese.

Even one piece was quite filling, so it seemed more than capable of standing in for a full meal, not just a snack.

Since I visited late in the afternoon this time, there wasn't much bread left, but next time I'm planning to hurry over in the morning when the shelves are fully stocked and try the coffee bread and other items too!!
