Pork galbi restaurant in Dongtan with kimchi udon: Saenggalbi Tare

In short

Saenggalbi Tare (생갈비 타레) is a charcoal-grilled fresh pork rib restaurant in the 11-ja Sangga shopping strip of Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan, in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. At Saenggalbi Tare, same-day butchered handon (Korean pork) ribs are grilled over charcoal and eaten with salt and tare sauce, and I paired them with kimchi udon; both the meat quality and the restaurant's cleanliness were satisfying. Verdict: a Dongtan meat spot worth a return visit, if only to try the house-made soba.

I've been on the hunt for a good meat restaurant in Dongtan lately, and this time I went to 'Saenggalbi Tare' in the 11-jasangga area of Dongtan. I've always loved raw pork ribs (saenggalbi) so I was curious about this place, and after trying it, the meat quality and clean interior made me want to come back again for sure!

What made it especially memorable was that they grill the raw ribs over charcoal, a bit different from a typical pork rib restaurant. That day we ordered han-don (Korean pork) raw ribs and kimchi udon — here's my review after enjoying everything from the meat to the sides!

Saenggalbi Tare is located in the 11-jasangga area of Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan, at 9 Jisan 2-gil, Dongtan-gu, Hwaseong-si. You could tell it was going to be clean just from the exterior haha — you usually picture a meat restaurant as a bit noisy and crowded, but this one felt calm and sophisticated from the outside.

Being near 11-jasangga, it felt like a convenient Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan restaurant for dinner nearby or gathering with friends.

Wood-tone interior of Saenggalbi Tare

What's the interior like?

The moment I walked into Saenggalbi Tare, I loved the interior atmosphere. It has a clean, overall wood-tone interior, so it felt more like walking into a Japanese restaurant than a meat restaurant haha.

The tables weren't crammed together and everything was well organized, so we ate comfortably!! It seemed like a great spot for a family meal or date, as well as a company dinner in Dongtan. There were a lot of reserved seats, and plenty of people who came with reservations!

Honestly, at a meat restaurant, of course the meat has to be good, but whether the tables and interior are clean matters too, don't you think? In that sense, Tare made a pretty satisfying first impression.

Plate of same-day butchered han-don raw pork ribs

Same-day butchered han-don raw pork ribs — how are they different?

What made Tare feel a bit more special was the 'raw ribs' (saenggalbi) themselves. The raw pork ribs used at the restaurant are said to be sourced and trimmed from meat butchered the same day. According to other reviews, they use grade 1+ pork raw ribs, and the owner personally trims and fillets them!

When I received the meat after ordering, the bright reddish-pink color was clean, and unlike seasoned pork ribs where the color is hidden by sauce, I could see the condition of the raw meat itself right away, which made me even more excited haha.

Table spread with han-don raw ribs and basic banchan

Finally, our order arrived all set out. That day we ordered 3 servings of han-don raw ribs and 1 kimchi udon. The meat didn't come alone — it came with side vegetables and basic banchan (side dishes), so the whole spread looked pretty substantial.

You can order comfortably from the table using a tablet. Since you don't need to call a staff member, it's easy to add more items. Besides meat, they also have soba, kimchi udon, and stew dishes, so I got curious about trying other menu items on my next visit. Especially since the handmade soba got good reviews, I thought I'd like to try the raw ribs with soba combo next time!!

Banchan at the self-serve bar

The basic banchan is set out at first, and any extra side dishes you need can be picked up yourself at the self-serve bar. The self-serve bar was also well organized with a good variety, so I could take small amounts as needed without feeling self-conscious. As someone who eats a lot of banchan with meat, this was a nice touch for me.

How does the charcoal-grilled raw rib taste?

And then, the han-don raw ribs I'd been waiting for arrived! Since it's raw ribs, not marinated pork ribs, the natural color and texture of the meat showed through, making it look even more appetizing. The thickness wasn't too thin either — cut to just the right thickness. It looked like the kind of visual where the juices would stay locked in once grilled over charcoal haha.

Raw ribs and side vegetables on the charcoal grill

Once the grill was ready, vegetables were grilled along with the raw ribs. Being able to grill side vegetables like kkwari peppers, mushrooms, onions, and garlic together was so much better than just eating meat the whole time!! The grill itself felt a bit different from a typical one, which made it fun to watch too. As the raw ribs started sizzling over the hot charcoal, the smell was seriously incredible.

Side dishes including gat kimchi and geotjeori

The side dishes that went with the meat also worked well together — gat kimchi (mustard leaf kimchi), geotjeori (fresh kimchi), and salads, the kind of banchan that's great to pair between bites of meat, so my hand kept reaching for them haha. Since the raw ribs weren't heavily seasoned, I could enjoy the flavor of these side dishes alongside it too. I saw salmon jang on the menu partway through and ordered it — with rice and wasabi... you know that flavor, everyone does... haha.

We grilled the raw ribs over charcoal until nicely browned. The outside got slightly crisp while the inside stayed juicy, so from the first bite I could taste that savory flavor. Unlike seasoned pork ribs where sweetness hits first, it was the meat's own clean, savory flavor that came through first. So at first, I'd recommend just dipping it lightly in salt without any other sauce!

My boyfriend and I kept saying 'this place is really good...' while we ate, haha. The subtle charcoal aroma brought out the raw ribs' distinct savory flavor even more. You might think raw pork ribs could be dry, but the meat I had got more savory the more I chewed, with juices coming through — completely satisfying!! It's been a while since I found a place I wanted to revisit this badly while searching for good meat restaurants in Dongtan.

Kimchi udon paired with the raw ribs

Saenggalbi Tare's kimchi udon is a spicy soup dish that pairs well with meat. I personally always look for a hot soup dish when eating meat, and to cut to the conclusion — the raw ribs and kimchi udon combo was great.

The spicy broth with kimchi in it cleared away the greasy feeling in my mouth perfectly when I had a spoonful between bites of raw ribs. With udon noodles in it too, it worked well as a proper meal on its own. It'd be great to order after finishing the meat, as a closing dish. I think I'd order kimchi udon again next time I come.

Menu items to try next time

On my way out, I looked at the menu again and got curious about the other items. Besides raw pork ribs, Tare also has beef raw ribs, handmade soba, bibim soba, kimchi udon, stews, and tare-don. Other reviews especially praised the handmade soba — apparently they make the noodles from peeled buckwheat themselves — so I want to try raw ribs with soba on my next visit. It's nice that after one visit, this isn't a place where you just eat the signature dish and stop — it makes you curious about the rest of the menu haha.

Would I recommend this as a Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan meat restaurant?

I visited Saenggalbi Tare while looking for a good meat restaurant in Yeongcheon-dong, and in conclusion, I left very satisfied. Grilling fresh, same-day butchered raw pork ribs over charcoal and enjoying them plain with salt or savory with tare sauce — there's a distinct charm here compared to the ribs I usually eat.

Above all, I loved that the store was managed so cleanly, which made the whole meal enjoyable haha. The han-don raw ribs and kimchi udon combo I had that day paired so well together that I'd personally recommend it. If you're looking for a good meat restaurant in Yeongcheon-dong, Dongtan, or a restaurant in 11-jasangga, this is worth a visit.

Next time, I'm planning to order raw ribs again along with the handmade soba!! Saenggalbi Tare had me curious about the next menu item even as I was walking out — this really felt like a Dongtan meat restaurant I'll revisit.
