Sokcho sashimi takeout seen on Shorts, booked 1 hour ahead: Hoega
In short
Hoega (회가) is a sashimi takeout restaurant in Sokcho, Gangwon, about a 5-minute drive or 10-minute walk from Sokcho Central Market. After seeing Hoega in a Shorts video, the writer phoned 1 hour ahead and picked up a small mixed sashimi platter (₩43,000) and a mixed mulhoe (cold raw fish soup, ₩17,000). Where is Hoega in Sokcho?
Hoega is close to Sokcho Central Market: about 5 minutes by car or 10 minutes on foot. It was perfect to stop by after browsing the market on the way to our accommodation.

Is there parking at Hoega?
There's room for about 3 cars beside the building, and you can also park in the alley by the K Mart right in front. It's free! We parked in the K Mart alley, picked up our sashimi at Hoega, then bought drinks and beverages at K Mart, which was really convenient.
Can you eat in at Hoega?
Inside, Hoega is small, with about 5 tables for four. It was packed with diners already eating... it seems to be a very popular local sashimi place. At 5:30 on a weekday evening it was full, so keep that in mind!
How to reserve Sokcho sashimi takeout at Hoega
For takeout, it's best to phone at least 1 hour before you visit. I ordered a small mixed sashimi platter and one mulhoe, called about an hour ahead, and everything was already packed up like this.

Besides our order, order calls kept coming in and the staff were busy packing. I felt like I'd found a great Sokcho takeout spot.

What are Hoega's menu and prices?
We ordered the small mixed sashimi platter (₩43,000) and the mixed mulhoe (₩17,000). The small platter is takeout only! Take a look at the menu, too.

Hoega's mixed sashimi was a combination of four fish: flatfish (gwangeo), rockfish (ureok), flounder (dodari) and yellowtail (bangeo). The lineup changes with the season.

How big is Hoega's small mixed sashimi platter?
The small platter was so generous it was hard to believe it was the small size. When I opened the bag the moment we got to our accommodation, I thought, wait, what is going on here?
"Boss, I ordered the small mixed platter, didn't I?"

There's a YouTuber I've followed since they introduced all kinds of tasty food under Cookat. In a recent Sokcho trip Short, they briefly featured Hoega with their own money, and the small platter looked so full that I bought one too. And the video was not exaggerating.

"Why is sashimi at seaside tourist spots more expensive?" The owner's style is apparently to give you plenty of fish rather than make filler side dishes (skidashi) just for show.

I don't know if the photo shows it, but the slices are seriously thick! It's hard to find a travel-town sashimi place with no overcharging and good value.

I'd also picked up a few more things at Sokcho Central Market, and we nearly ran out of room on the island table, haha

How did Hoega's mixed sashimi taste?
My chopsticks went to Hoega's sashimi before the market food. Dipped in chojang (sweet-spicy chili vinegar sauce), it brought out the clean, mild sweetness of white fish.

The flatfish kept its signature chewy texture, and it was so fresh there was no fishy smell!

The small platter was labeled 1.5 servings, but I think it's just right for two people.

I made DIY flatfish sushi on top of the rice provided, and it was absolutely delicious.
How is Hoega's mixed mulhoe?
Hoega's mixed mulhoe (₩17,000) is made with fresh live fish, they say. The seasoned broth came packed in a plastic bottle, and I poured it in glug glug glug~

There was one scored abalone sliced into the mulhoe, and it was crunchy and tasty.

Look at how much live fish is in this mulhoe. The owner must still be making a profit, right? haha I added the somyeon (thin wheat noodles), packed separately so they don't get soggy, and ate until I was full.

Would I go back to Hoega for Sokcho sashimi takeout?
Even in the small size, Hoega's platter is generous enough to fill two people. It's a great-value sashimi spot and a Sokcho takeout place near Central Market where you don't have to worry about overcharging 🐟✨ If I visit Sokcho again, I'll book Hoega for sashimi takeout without a second thought!
