Sushi restaurant by Tekeunopakeu Station: squid & red crab, Sushi Doku

I had plans with an acquaintance, so we headed to Sushi Doku The Songdo near Tekeunopakeu Station. There are plenty of sushi places, but when you actually start choosing a menu, prices and set contents are all over the place, right? This one caught my eye because it has a set that comes with udon, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and tempura alongside the sushi.

Where is Sushi Doku The Songdo, and where do you park?

Sushi Doku The Songdo is a sushi restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Honesta building in Songdo, Incheon. It's close to Exit 2 of Incheon Line 1's Tekeunopakeu Station, so it's easy to reach by public transport. If you drive, you can use the Honesta building car park (2 hours of free parking).

A calm dining room with wooden lattice and warm lighting

Inside, the whole place felt calm. The wooden lattice and decorative lighting give it the feel of a Japanese restaurant. There were dark curtains, wooden interiors and warm lighting, and the tables were spaced with reasonable separation.

What comes with the ₩25,900 10-piece Premium Sushi Special Set?

What I ordered that day was the Premium Sushi Special Set (10 pieces). The price is ₩25,900. You get 10 pieces of sushi plus udon, chawanmushi, salad, shrimp tempura and chicken karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken).

When the food arrived, the first thing I noticed was the sushi neatly arranged on a wooden plate. The bright orange of the salmon, the red of the tuna, the sheen of the white fish and the golden grilled eel made for a lot of color. With so many dishes on one tray, it looks generous to the eye too.

Which fish and toppings are in the special set sushi?

The sushi in the set that day used a range of ingredients: flounder, sea bream, salmon, tuna, squid (ikka), sweet shrimp, red shrimp, red snow crab meat and eel. Some were familiar favorites, but there were also kinds I don't eat often, so it was fun picking through them one by one.

The salmon sushi in particular had a long cut of salmon draped over the rice. Seeing such thick, generously long salmon made the piece look even bigger. The eel sushi stood out for its glossy brown sauce and golden surface, and the red shrimp and red snow crab sushi each offered a different texture.

Ankimo (monkfish liver) sushi wrapped in seaweed

The ankimo sushi was memorable too. Ankimo is monkfish liver, and unlike regular raw fish sushi, it's known for a soft, rich flavor. At Sushi Doku The Songdo, a generous portion of ankimo sits on seaweed-wrapped rice, finished with sliced scallions.

For the soy sauce, you can adjust how much wasabi you add to taste, and the table had a silicone brush for the soy sauce. Being able to brush a little onto each piece was handy.

Chawanmushi, udon and tempura: the special set sides

Besides the sushi, I looked at the other dishes in the set. Chawanmushi, udon and tempura are a must, of course. First, the chawanmushi in a small ceramic bowl.

It was a Japanese-style egg custard with a smooth, soft surface, with shrimp and ginkgo nuts inside. A small garnish on top caught my eye too, and having warm chawanmushi between bites of sushi made the meal feel even more varied.

The udon came with garland chrysanthemum (ssukgat), scallions, fish cake and plump noodles.

The toppings were piled generously over the broth, and the hot soup goes well with sushi. Thick noodles and even cute Nemo-shaped fish cake!!

Shrimp tempura and chicken karaage

Fried dishes are included in the special set too.

The shrimp tempura and chicken karaage came together on a small plate, with white sauce and herbs sprinkled over the crispy coating. The set is built around sushi, but with several sides you get a variety of textures and flavors through the meal.
