Saturday 10-minute wait, wine corkage at a Mapo raw fish restaurant

In short

Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is a neighborhood raw fish restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, one minute on foot from Daeheung Station Exit 3. Visiting on a Saturday at 7pm meant a 10-minute wait, then four people shared the ₩151,000 signature set with gizzard shad sashimi, assorted sashimi and seafood, plus free corkage on a bottle of white wine even though the salt-grilled shrimp had sold out. It works well for both family gatherings and a night out with friends.

Went with friends for a weekend evening get-together to Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada (제철담은 마포바다), a raw fish restaurant in Mapo! From families with babies to neighborhood regulars out drinking, the place was packed — it already had that unmistakable local-favorite feel.

We showed up around 7pm on a Saturday and waited about 10 minutes before getting seated. Tables started opening up a bit after 7:30, so if you'd rather skip the wait, go a little later — but if you're worried about seasonal menu items selling out, go early!

Interior with a comfortable neighborhood raw fish restaurant atmosphere

The interior isn't flashy — more the comfortable, neighborhood-raw-fish-joint feel, good for casually enjoying sashimi and drinks. Plenty of tables, and lots of family groups too, so it seemed like a solid pick for a Mapo family gathering. No parking though, so public transit is the way to go.

A signature spread built for four

We ordered the Mapo Bada Signature Set for ₩151,000. It comes with salt-grilled shrimp, raw shrimp, gizzard shad sashimi and assorted sashimi, grilled gizzard shad, assorted seafood, cold pork slices, and tofu kimchi — a whole variety spread on one table. Unfortunately, since we visited a bit late, the salt-grilled shrimp had sold out.

Steamed egg, various side dishes, and seaweed soup all come standard, so it seems like a good place for families with babies too!

A fresh seafood spread

The assorted seafood was solid from the start. The scallop sashimi had no fishy taste and was properly fresh, and the abalone sashimi had a good chewy texture. The live octopus was moving the moment it hit the table — anyone who loves seafood will probably be quite happy with this spread!

Seasonal gizzard shad sashimi plus assorted sashimi

The sashimi lineup started with seasonal gizzard shad, then moved through flounder, sea bass, amberjack, and sea bream. Rather than a big pile of just one type, we got to compare several fish in smaller portions, which was nice for matching everyone's taste.

Sea bream sashimi changes flavor over time so you have to eat it first. Above all, it was a generous portion for four people to share!

Autumn gizzard shad especially was clearly in season — nutty and delicious haha. Now I understand why there were so many older gentlemen dining there.

Nutty grilled gizzard shad too

The grilled gizzard shad also comes out as one big fish per person, making it a great side dish to pair with a drink.

Tofu kimchi and cold pork slices too

Having side dishes like tofu kimchi and cold pork slices to mix in between rounds of sashimi is another plus.

The cold pork slices came with a seasoned wild chervil salad, which paired nicely.

What are the corkage-free terms?

Mapo Bada also offers free corkage (only for liquor not already sold in the restaurant). One bottle of wine, whiskey, sake, or traditional liquor is free, and it's ₩10,000 per bottle beyond that! We brought a bottle of white wine that paired well with the sashimi and seafood, which was great.

To sum up

  • Value: Signature set for 4 at ₩151,000 — seasonal sashimi, grilled fish, assorted seafood, and more
  • Portions: Generous enough for 4 people to eat and drink well, especially good for seafood lovers
  • Atmosphere: Recommended for groups, family gatherings, and company dinners
  • A Mapo/Gongdeok restaurant with free corkage
