Gwangju eel BBQ, no-wait 3:30pm weekend visit with Mom: Deokeun Jangeo

Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch is an eel market and self-service charcoal grill restaurant on Haseo-ro in Buk-gu, Gwangju, next to Honam Regional Rehabilitation Hospital. The writer and her mom walked in with no wait around 3:30pm on a weekend, picked about 600g of eel for two (around ₩33,000) at the market counter, then paid a table fee to grill it on the 2nd floor. The eel at Deokeun Jangeo was chewy with no fishy smell and plenty for two, and skipping peak mealtimes made it a relaxed meal.

Pocheon café for solo work by annex windows, butter bar: Geurine Oasis

Geurine Oasis (그리네 오아시스) is a large bakery café near Gomo Lake Park in Soheul-eup, Pocheon, Gyeonggi. On a solo weekday revisit, the writer worked at the big windows in the Geurine Oasis annex over a decaf hazelnut latte (8,000 won plus 1,000 won for decaf) and a thick, chewy ice cream butter bar (7,500 won). The butter bar was wonderfully chewy but very sweet with the hazelnut latte, so Geurine Oasis is a great Pocheon café for working alone with a view, and the butter bar is best paired with a plain latte.

Uijeongbu beef soup restaurant: rainy-day Naju gomtang set at Hagane

Hagane Hanwoo Gomtang Uijeongbu Main Branch is a newly opened hanwoo (Korean beef) gomtang restaurant in Geumo-dong, Uijeongbu, across from Eulji University Hospital. On a cold, rainy day the writer ordered the Hagane Hansang (Naju gomtang) and the Hagane Mandu Hansang (hanwoo gomtang with dumplings), each 13,900 won. The clear Naju gomtang, the chewy beef knee cartilage and chive salad, and the dipping sauce for the beef stood out. Hagane Hanwoo Gomtang won over a writer who rarely finishes a bowl, down to the last spoonful of broth.

Uijeongbu bakery for Dubai chocolate salt bread & egg tarts: Byway

Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch is a bakery in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, across from the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Government Building, known for its salt bread. On a rainy weekday lunch, the writer took home a salt bread 4-pack (₩9,900), a Dubai chocolate salt bread (₩6,500) and 2 egg tarts for ₩24,000 in total; the pistachio-and-kataifi-packed Dubai chocolate salt bread and the egg tarts warmed in an air fryer were the standouts. Byway Bakers is a good bakery in Uijeongbu for buying salt bread in value bundles.

Uijeongbu Station pork galbi with pudding steamed egg: Manpo Galbi

Manpo Galbi Uijeongbu Main Branch is a handmade pork galbi restaurant 225 m from Exit 1 of Uijeongbu Station on the light rail line in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Around 6 pm on a weekday, at a table by the open windows, the writer had 2 servings of handmade marinated pork galbi (₩16,000 per serving) with brisket doenjang stew and pudding steamed egg, plus the free handmade Hamhung-style naengmyeon (cold noodles) served one per person, ordering one spicy bibim and one cold-broth mul naengmyeon. With side dishes that include yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and generous side portions, Manpo Galbi was a good-value pork galbi dinner, and the mul naengmyeon tasted better than the bibim.

Clam kalguksu in Millak-dong, Uijeongbu, with a serving robot: Ingane

Ingane is a newly opened kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and noodle restaurant on Songhyeon-ro 82beon-gil in Millak-dong, Uijeongbu. At a weekend lunch, the anchovy-broth kalguksu and the kimchi mari guksu (chilled kimchi noodle soup) cost 10,000 won each. The kalguksu came with plenty of clams in a deep, refreshing broth, and the kimchi mari guksu was sweet and tangy with slushy ice floating on top. Portions are generous and rice and kimchi are free and self-serve, so for a hearty lunch, Ingane's anchovy kalguksu is well worth ordering.

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nogyang Branch is a newly opened sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant on Dongil-ro in Uijeongbu, between Nogyang and Ganeung stations. On the way back from camping, the writer stopped at Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk for lunch and ordered the spicy sundaeguk (12,000 won) and the pork bone soup with dried cabbage leaves (11,000 won); the kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and napa cabbage kimchi were tasty, and the pork bones were big and satisfying. With a large parking lot and a self-serve banchan bar, Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nogyang Branch is a good lunch stop for gukbap when you're driving.

Uijeongbu café with bar-style window seats and decaf latte: Forerest

Forerest is a large café at 181 Nogyang-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, open from 11:00 until midnight. On a weekend afternoon visit, Forerest's rooms each had a different concept, and the window counter with bar-style seats facing outside was the spot for a decaf latte (₩6,500), an iced americano (₩5,500), and Earl Grey and matcha Basque cheesecakes (₩8,000 each). The Earl Grey Basque was sweeter and more fragrant than the matcha, making it the one to order.
