Gyodae gimbap restaurant solo dinner: keto-style rolls, Halls Gimbap
In short
Halls Gimbap Main Branch is a gimbap (seaweed rice roll) snack shop 5 minutes on foot from Gyodae Station Exit 1 in Seocho, Seoul. On a solo evening visit, the writer ordered the basic Halls gimbap with a dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) set and a cheese egg gimbap. The rolls had little rice and plenty of vegetables, almost like keto gimbap, and the special mustard-flavored sauce served with the cheese egg gimbap was the highlight. Halls Gimbap Main Branch is a good solo-dining spot near Gyodae Station when you're watching your diet but still craving gimbap.

There are a lot of restaurants around Gyodae, but with so many office workers in the area, not many of them are actually good value. I eat alone a lot, so I'm always on the hunt for light, budget-friendly spots near Gyodae — and I found one I've been visiting often lately, so I wanted to write up a review.

Location — 5 minutes on foot from Gyodae Station Exit 1
Halls Gimbap Main Branch, known as a great Gyodae gimbap spot, is about a 5-minute walk from Gyodae Station. Since there aren't many Korean snack bars around, a lot of regulars seem to make a point of coming here. It's not far from Gyodae Station Exit 1, but it has the feel of a neighborhood snack bar.

Solo-dining vibe and the cup ramyeon corner
Halls Gimbap Main Branch has a cozy, in-front-of-school snack bar feel, and there were noticeably many solo diners. Maybe that's why there's a cup noodle corner on one side, with water and broth set up separately. Since it was dinner time, there were a lot of takeout customers and the staff seemed really busy, but they still greeted everyone kindly — it felt like a warm, familiar Gyodae eatery.

Menu — gimbap, dakgangjeong, tteokbokki, and set combos
This Gyodae solo-dining favorite has gimbap as its signature, but the rest of the menu is just dakgangjeong and tteokbokki, with ramyeon available only as cup noodles. What's great for solo diners is that there's a gimbap-and-dakgangjeong set, so you can try both together — and the price on that combo was so reasonable it felt like a gift. In this era of high prices, I don't think there's another deal like this among Gyodae restaurants.

Basic Halls gimbap + dakgangjeong set
I ordered the basic Halls gimbap with dakgangjeong, and since it's a set menu, it felt like getting half-and-half of each. It would be perfect to pack for a school group order or a picnic. The dakgangjeong tasted freshly fried, and eating it together with the chili peppers on top was really delicious.

Light on rice, heavy on vegetables — almost like keto gimbap
The reason Halls Gimbap is known as a great Gyodae gimbap spot is that it uses less rice and packs in more vegetables, which made it feel diet-friendly, almost like eating keto gimbap. The crunchy bite felt like eating a salad gimbap, and pairing it with the sweet-and-sour dakgangjeong created a really nice balance. Each piece of gimbap was big, so even though it didn't feel like I'd eaten a whole roll, I was still stuffed by the huge portion — the plain (sujeong) roll was the tastiest.

Cheese egg gimbap and the special mustard sauce
Since I love gimbap so much, I also ordered the cheese egg gimbap, which was packed full of cheese and egg — it paired really well with the dakgangjeong too. After always eating gimbap loaded with rice, trying one this full of fillings made the difference in taste really clear.

When you order the cheese egg gimbap at Halls Gimbap, they give you a special sauce on the side, which turned out to be another highlight — it had a hint of mustard flavor that went perfectly with the cheese and egg, and with perilla leaf mixed in, it even had a nice fragrance. It hit exactly my taste, and it's a Gyodae gimbap spot I want to visit often. I'd been steadily cutting gimbap out while watching what I eat, but with this little rice and this many ingredients, it feels like something I could eat every day and still stay on track.
Who would I recommend this to
There aren't many places for solo dining near Gyodae Station, so a spot like Halls Gimbap — a gimbap specialist where you can also enjoy dakgangjeong — is a real find. If you love gimbap like me but are watching your diet, or if you want takeout before a picnic or an outing nearby, I highly recommend stopping by and trying the gimbap with dakgangjeong together.
