Yeonnam-dong teppanyaki beef sets and yakisoba: Cheolpan Yori Miro

In short

Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam (철판요리미로 연남점) is a teppanyaki and Japanese restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, near Hongik Univ. Station. The writer shared a buchaesal (top blade) set and a salchisal (chuck flap) set to compare the two beef cuts, then added yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried noodles) for a more varied meal. Cheolpan Yori Miro is worth shortlisting in Yeonnam-dong when you want a teppanyaki beef set with a noodle dish on the side.

When you look for a place to eat in Yeonnam-dong, there are so many good restaurants that it's hard to decide, right? Hongdae especially has lots of atmospheric spots, with everything from Japanese food to meat dishes, so even picking a menu isn't easy.

This time I wanted meat, and I also wanted the teppanyaki (iron-griddle cooking) I usually like, so I went to Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam (철판요리미로 연남점). I had the budaesal set, the salchisal set and yakisoba, and the combination worked together better than I expected, so I was happy with it.

If you're hunting for a Yeonnam-dong restaurant and want a different kind of Japanese meal, this might be worth a look.

What is Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam like?

Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam is a restaurant in the Yeonnam-dong alleys where you can enjoy meat sets and Japanese noodle dishes, with teppanyaki at the center. Yeonnam-dong is a neighborhood full of individual restaurants down every alley, so wandering around looking for a place is half the fun. Since this one is, as the name says, all about teppanyaki, I was curious about the menu right away.

Grilling meat at a regular barbecue place is great, but teppanyaki has its own charm, right? I liked that you can add a noodle dish to the meat, which makes the meal a bit more varied.

When I'm looking near Hongik Univ. Station or planning a date in Yeonnam-dong, I care about the mood of the meal as well as the menu. In that sense, being able to enjoy both teppanyaki and Japanese dishes was interesting.

If you're searching for Yeonnam-dong restaurants and want something a little different from your usual, it's a good option to try.

What did we order? Budaesal and salchisal sets

We ordered the budaesal set (top blade beef) and the salchisal set (marbled chuck flap). We decided to add yakisoba too.

When choosing meat, budaesal and salchisal each have their own appeal, so picking just one felt like a shame. Budaesal makes you expect a clean, light beefy taste and a nice chew, while salchisal is a cut you enjoy for its soft, rich flavor.

Ordering both sets meant I could compare two different meat flavors as I ate. Even with the same kind of meat, texture and flavor change by cut, so finding what suits your taste is fun.

I felt that at Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam, rather than eating only a meat set, adding something like yakisoba is a pretty good combination.

How is the budaesal set? Light, and nutty the more you chew

The budaesal set at Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam had the clean taste of the meat itself and a savory flavor that builds as you chew. I tried the budaesal set first, and since it's a cut that lets you enjoy the beef's own flavor, I personally like it.

If meat is too tough it bugs you the whole meal, but here I could enjoy budaesal's characteristic texture while eating. With rice, the meat's flavor blended in without being heavy, so it suited a full meal.

If you keep eating strongly seasoned food you can get tired of it quickly, so having a dish that lets you taste the meat itself made the whole meal feel more balanced.

If you're looking for a restaurant near Hongik Univ. Station and want a hearty meat set, the budaesal set is worth keeping an eye on.

How is the salchisal set? Richer in flavor than budaesal

The salchisal set at Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam has an appealing rich, nutty flavor, and it was nice to alternate with the lighter budaesal set. Next up, the salchisal set! Eating it while comparing with budaesal, it was fun to see that each cut really has its own charm. Salchisal is a dish meat lovers will be glad to see.

Bite by bite, I felt budaesal leans light and salchisal leans more flavorful. Alternating between the two made the meal feel less monotonous than ordering just one.

It went well with rice too, and if you go with fellow meat lovers, each ordering a different set and sharing would be nice.

Personally, ordering budaesal and salchisal together was a good choice this time. If I'd had only one, I'd have missed the charm of the other cut.

Is yakisoba worth ordering too?

At Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam, I recommend pairing a meat set with yakisoba. I thought a meat set alone might feel a little lacking, so I ordered it too, and in the end I was glad I did. Yakisoba is the dish I can't leave out of this meal.

Yakisoba gives you the chewy texture of noodles and the savory depth of the sauce, which is a different charm from the meat. Eating a bite of yakisoba after the rich meat changed the flow of flavors, which I liked. The noodle flavor made the meal feel richer overall.

When you think of teppanyaki, meat comes to mind first, but adding a noodle dish like this seems to widen the choices too.

If you like yakisoba or often eat Japanese food, ordering it with a meat set is worth trying.

How to combine teppanyaki and Japanese dishes

The budaesal set, salchisal set and yakisoba each differ in taste and texture, so they were nice to alternate between. I think the charm of teppanyaki is that it doesn't end with meat. You can have a hearty meat set and enjoy a noodle dish too, so mixing and matching the menu was fun.

Enjoying the nutty, light meat and then adding the savory depth of yakisoba kept things from getting boring until the end.

If you're searching for Hongdae yakiniku (Japanese-style grilled meat) or Yeonnam-dong teppanyaki, you're probably most curious about the meat, but I'd like you to look at the noodle dishes too. Mixing several dishes to your taste makes for a more satisfying meal.

Of course, everyone has their own standard for menu and portions, so check the menu before visiting and choose what suits you.

Good for a meal near Hongik Univ. Station? What to check before visiting

Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam is a restaurant near Hongik Univ. Station with something for both meat set lovers and fans of Japanese noodle dishes. Do check the wait and menu prices before you go, though.

Yeonnam-dong is a great neighborhood for meeting friends or going on a date, right? You can eat and then visit a nearby café or stroll the alleys, so it's an area that often comes to mind when choosing where to eat.

What impressed me about Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam is that there are options both for people who like meat sets such as the budaesal and salchisal sets, and for people who like Japanese noodle dishes such as yakisoba.

However, crowding and waits can vary by day and time, so if you want a relaxed meal, check operating information and how busy it is before visiting. Menu prices and offerings can change too, so it's even better to look up the latest information.

If you're looking for a Yeonnam-dong restaurant and want a slightly different meat set, or want teppanyaki near Hongik Univ. Station, it's worth putting on your list.

My honest verdict after eating here

The best part at Cheolpan Yori Miro Yeonnam was being able to enjoy the budaesal set and the salchisal set together. I could feel how the taste differs by cut, and adding yakisoba made the meal richer.

Personally, I liked ordering a noodle dish along with the meat rather than eating meat alone. However, ordering several dishes can mean a lot of food, so it's better to order according to how much you usually eat.

It's a place I'd think of when I'm a little tired of my usual Yeonnam-dong menus, or when I want to enjoy a meat set and yakisoba together.

It was a meal where I enjoyed it all: the lightness of budaesal, the nuttiness of salchisal and the savory depth of yakisoba.

When you eat teppanyaki, are you team meat set, or team noodles like yakisoba?
