Shoulder-length, perm grown out: what now?

Five months after my last perm, the curl was completely gone and my hair sat at an awkward shoulder length when I visited Miod Hair Salon (미오드헤어살롱) in Dongseong-ro, Daegu. Honestly, I agonized right up to the day before. Tied up, it looked half-done; left down, it looked too messy. It was total "beggar zone" hair (the Korean joke for that in-between length). 😅

Should I just redo the perm, cut first, or change my style completely this time —

I couldn't decide on my own, so I ended up visiting Miod Hair Salon, which is known in Dongseong-ro for layered cuts and layered perms.

There's no private parking, so keep in mind you'll need a nearby paid lot.

I took the elevator up, and the first impression was good the moment I opened the door. The space was clean and bright, and a bit bigger than I expected.

The interior is white-toned, with plants placed here and there, so it feels warm and comfortable rather than stiff.

The restroom impressed me too. It was so spacious and neat that I wondered for a second if it was really a restroom, haha. It's a small thing, but you can tell they care about how they keep the space.

How does the consultation at Miod Hair Salon work?

The moment you sit down, you fill out a checklist. Since I'd ticked off my concerns beforehand, the talk with my stylist was much more specific.

With that in-between shoulder length, I just couldn't decide whether to cut a lot and perm, or perm without cutting. My stylist was really thorough: she checked my face shape on the right and left sides separately, looked at my head shape too, and set a styling direction that suited my face.

I told her I'm not good at styling, and she kindly showed me ways to do it easily at home, which I really appreciated. The conclusion: tidy the length with a layered cut, then style it firmly with a layered perm.

The layered perm process: from nutrition treatment to shampoo

Before the layered perm, they applied a generous nutrition treatment.

Since they look after the hair's condition before the perm, I worried a lot less about damage.

They also brought me an americano midway, so the long treatment didn't feel boring. ☕

The shampoo was the real highlight — the massage was so refreshing and deep that my eyes kept drifting shut. I almost fell asleep 😪 They rinsed everything out cleanly, with nothing left behind~

At the end she also shared a handy tip for boosting volume on top — with just that one tip, even a klutz like me can do it easily! 😅

Can you get volume without a root perm?

With just the layered cut and layered perm, and no separate root perm, the volume came back. Volume was my biggest worry, and my hair now looks fuller and thicker.

The layered cut builds the tiers, and the layered perm on top makes the volume flow naturally from top to bottom. It doesn't look like the roots were forced upright, yet there's volume, and I was happy with it.

I think it would look even prettier on longer hair, so next time I'd like to try it long 😆
